What’s so upsetting about their marriage is not only the fact that Bloberta got married out of a feeling of obligation in order to feel loved, but the fact that they bring out the absolute worst in each other. Clay developed alcoholism because he continued to abuse alcohol after Bloberta introduced him to it, and Bloberta became a more or less desensitized mother, who loves her children, but hates her husband so much more.

the first time i came in contact with moral orel, it was this music video. i had no idea what it was really about until months later, where i watched a video essay on it and here i am, back, watching this video with so much more context. initially i thought it was about a family estranged from one another over time, that bloberta and clay were once in love and they fell out of love. i thought orel was the child suffering from a family from the products of a father and mother that didn't love one another anymore. now i know what truly happened and while i wasn't all wrong, the truth is much worse

I always interpreted this song as a victim explaining and working through her situation with her friends/therapist. She finds herself trapped in an abuse relationship and denial is one of the first stages. "Me and my husband, we were doing better" Cutting off friends, losing loved ones because of your toxic relationship, so now it's just you and them against the world. "It's always been just him and me together". Theres so much more.
