1:22:51, "pas de deux" was actually a requiem for his sister who died on the precious days, Tchaikovsky had a very difficult time composing the nutcracker ballet considering it too childish and it is, but here you can hear what sentiment is all about and how it will transform sadness into a beautiful composition that fits perfectly into the full ballet you can actually fell like the piece is neverending as he wished it wouldve been. It brings me to tears.

Also the GOAT choreographer btw. The conductor of the orchestra is a former ballerina herself which helps the dancers no end when it comes to the speed she runs the pieces at, where the pauses are for a pose etc. V unusual but v cool!

oh wow it's so rare to see ballet reactions!! i'm so glad you enjoyed it! one of my favourites is Giselle performed by Natalia Osipova. It's a bit darker in tone and I highly recommend it if you're interested.

Man, this just made my hert melt, that you went for the full performance. Imo you have just listened to probably the best 90 minutes of classical music you can find on the internet. Tchaik's masterpiece imo is this 90 minute ballet. No other piece ever made has so many memorable melodies (and so many that are popular even among people not listening to classical) cramped into such little time. Tchaikowsky presents us with all of his mastery in crafting melodies. Most dance companies perform this every year around November and December. It's a great way to get into ballet, simply because of how short, fun and easy to digest it is. We used to go and see this every year. That's just how much of a classic it is. Especially for a dancer. Still one of my proudest accomplishments dancing this ballet a couple of times. Many ballets these days are getting modern versions (which I'm not much of a fan of lol), but this is just such a classic, they don't dare to change it. One of the few ballets where they still bring out a creative set and keep it accurate to what it looked like when it was premiered. Definitely a vibe to see live. It's just a happy dance, unlike many ballets that deal with tragedy, death and forbidden love. You should definitely go if you have a chance.

This is my first time seeing a reaction to a full length ballet. As a former ballerina this hit me in all of the feels. It brought me back to performing this as a child. I am so glad you enjoyed it! Amazing production, choreography. Everything magical, sparkling, delightful in this masterpiece danced the accomplished NY young ballet company. Tchaikovsky has brightened our world with this gem for the Christmas season. So enchanting, so Russian! The pas de deux elicits tears.

W choice. Every piece of music in it is a straight banger. Waltz of the flowers, dancw of the sugar plum fairy, dance of the reed pipes (the one in all your intros), and the trepak dance to name a few.

I actually played in the orchestra pit for Nutcracker two weekends this December with a youth orchestra I’m in. It was such a magical experience and I feel honored to have done that :)

The great choice for that's days. My most favorite ballet. That's music, dances, atmosphere... By the way, I've played this ballet with the theater orchestra twice in the last week. And these feelings and the atmosphere when you sit and play in the orchestra pit are even more incredible and indescribable.

They actually show nutcracker and other ballets at the movie theaters. Swan lake Giselle Cinderella. I know they're mostly girly stuff but these people train so hard. Find the documentary "Getting to the Nutcracker" kids up to 18 work hard at the marat dukayev school of ballet in Los Angeles. It's mostly volunteers, so many people involved, including parents.

I've been honored to see the full ballet performed live on 3 separate occasions, twice in Orlando Florida and once in San Francisco. Of course, I'm an older goat, so I've had more years and opportunities to attend. I hope to see it at least one more time. Don't pass up the opportunity when it comes around.

I really enjoyed watching this with you on Christmas Day! One of our family traditions is to go see the Nutcracker at least once each Christmas season, and we missed it this year, so this was special. What a great production!

It's so great to see different ethnic groups seeing the classics. I watch this at beginning if winter to get in the mood for Christmas. I'm a little b8t of a bad humbug scrooge when it gets cold and gets dark earlier. I much prefer hot summers. But I'm watching you watch the nutcracker and very pleased. ah man, a little late to the party, but this came up on my suggested and i'm so glad it did. I was the prince in this production a million years ago (not in the video lol), and it's bringing back all kinds of nostalgia. It's so amazing to see someone really appreciate the art form these days, I love story ballets so much. And side note, Tchaikowsky HATED the Nutcracker. He thought it was his least well-written piece and it ended up being his most popular. Thank you so much for keeping this alive. Still pisses me off that they put the sugar plum at the beginning of Act II instead of in the grand pas like it's supposed to at the end. I remember the orchestra conductor during rehearsal saying "Alright, folks, time for sugar plum in the wrong place" and the ballet master getting super irritated with her 🤣🤣

He probably hated it because of how repetitive the music gets/and how every song starts to sound the same despite theie vast difference. Same as going to a beautiful car show, you get desensitized too quickly!

In ballet, I don't like the fact that certain musical scenes are simply left out to make the time go faster. Like here, for example, after the grandfather dance and the other thing normally has to be the night scene and not this solo violin concert. In Swan Lake one or a few scenes are always left out or a beat is cut and I don't like that. That's why I also want to hear a ballet melody where it says exactly in the sheet music. No cut, no timeskip, but everything exactly what is there in the notes and in the choreography. Sorry if that sounds superficial "The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, etc." They are very beautiful ballets that you can really enjoy.

I have danced for many years and I am not aware of this practice. Must be a thing your local companies did (I believe there are also some slight changes in this version I've never seen before), because I always felt many pieces dragged on. After all, all the great ballet works are in fact written for the specific ballet (especially when you have Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Minkus, Delibes etc.)

Agreed.... the solo violinist is completely unnecessary. It's not from the actual ballet... so on what planet would it be appropriate with the NYC Ballet.

in my opinion the most famous ballet! (even those who don't do ballet know the music of the show) if I had to recommend another equally well-known ballet it would be Sleeping Beauty, almost all of the pieces of which were used in the Disney film of the same name

I've seen this once in person - a great fairy tale. Apparently, Tchaikovsky was at his most depressed when he composed this. My favourite parts are the dance of the snow flakes and the suite of dances in act 2 (tea, coffee, chocolate, and Mother Ginger). But the whole thing is brilliant. The Arab dance I saw was very sensual - which fits the music, but was a little racy, a small woman writhing like a snake over a very tall male dancer. Thanks for reacting to this classic. For future reactions, you might try Stravinsky's Pulcinella and Petroushka, both Russian ballets, but certainly not Tchaikovsky.
