I still have a steelhead strong 3 and love that club. Best feeling 3w off the face I've ever seen. I tried hitting my old Titleist 975D against my 10 yr newer 905T and it was only a handful of yards difference. I think it's the modern balls that really make the new clubs shine. We weren't using Pro V1s in 2000.

Distance aside (and often not even that) clubs get crappier and crappier in any type of terms of long-lasting construction, despite engineering and quirks and bells and whistles. Sheep are herded into wanting new new new while the OEMs design them to look crappier sooner and sooner and be more disposable than ever, weird shapes and plastic and paint all over the place... just disposable.

There is a never ending debate that the big names in golf (Callaway, Titleist, Ping, Taylormade, etc.) make the best clubs. I would like to see a similar challenge with second tier or even third tier name brand clubs (name brands few have heard of) to see the numbers (carry distance, spin, ball speed, etc.).

Jazz, Tour Select, Slazenger, etc... Why not? to add, I used Jazz Fat Cats for years and while I'm not as good as the group I usually played with, distance was always comparable. They all used Taylormade or Callaway. Fat Cats are a great set for beginners shooting 100 to intermediate golfers shooting high 80s/low 90s

Pretty much since drivers are maxed out to the legal limit by the USGA and R&A in both size and hotness of the face over a decade ago, club manufacturers have to think of innovative ways of making clubs more sellable such as increasing forgiveness, changing loft and lie angles, new shafts and colors. If you hit a driver on the button consistently on a maxed out COR clubface, then there's no reason for you to upgrade.

When you pair a guy that's always trying to make the other one look stupid ever minute or so, with a guy that resents it a bit.... Anyhew, just got a Great Big Bertha Hawkeye with tungsten screw today for $1.18 at thrift. Thought it would be fun to re-develop a swing with before I go ruining newer stuff I have, chili dipping and making permanent skye scratches. Plus I'd rather learn on something, not ridiculous, but a little more difficult and then enjoy treats of nicer newer stuff where applicable. Then third in my evolution will be to be able to play a blade and try my two old forged sets. not as worried about score as fun and feel, and I LOVE making neglected old clubs look cool again (like 1970 year etc.).

The spin out of rough is the only difference as the bigger groove allows more dirt/grass to get in and allow the face to spin the ball, from fairway there will be no difference. The face is what spins the ball not the grooves hence rough faces etc letting your wedge rust or milled faces

It's just the fact the loft of the clubs suit Rick better because he hits up on it, Pete needs a low lofted club because of how much he hits down on the ball which will cause it to balloon up and spin more if the loft is too high.
