My dad had one of these insane beasts attached to a Fordson Major. Rear mounted 2nd motor, with beltdrive to the shaft. He cut hedges at his sharemilking property in Cardiff (Taranaki, NZ) before driving it up the way a bit to Tariki in '83, (where there were no hedges). I remember the sound just like the vid here, and my dad wearing a motorcycle helmet for 'protection' (but years later admitting that wouldn't do shit and the whole thing was kinda terrifying). If anyone out there has any ideas where that one went I would be freakin stoked :-)

@SnowBanditt ... you DO know that a blade only creates airflow when it's angled. That thing is flat, it's basically a spinning knife.... knives don't fly dude. And boy am I happy that they don't. :)

I love it however this has to be one of the most dangerous machines ive ever seen. Id want a 1/2 mile safety barrier around it including in the air. The cameraman is brave or insane. If that hit a big rock and unbalanced it, the machine would self destruct like a helicopter funky chicken.

It is macrocarpa and a damn fine windbreak. However, it's foliage is an abortifacient, so when it grows too thick and wide and the cows can reach and eat it, it gets trimmed back... and survives this trimming every few years...

That looks like it might be a dairy farm. The hedge apears to be macrocarpa tree, and pregnant cows can abort if they eat macrocarpa foliage. So every so often they have to be trimmed back so the cows can't reach the trees. The macrocarpa is an excellent windbreak tree....it's worth trimming it.

No, there is at least one other constructed by the same engineer... and many more operating throughout NZ of the same basic design... large truck chassis, fully armoured in steel plate separate drive engine for blades, hydraulic drive to blades and arms to angle and elevate blades.....
