Mean Value Theorem

The Mean Value Theorem connects behavior of a function over an interval (the average rate of change) with the value of the derivative at a single point. The consequence of this theorem is that by knowing things about what happens to a derivative at all points in an interval, we gain information about what the function can do globally.
