I genuinely wish someone explained that to me in this clear way when I started investing, it would have saved me weeks and weeks of googling and going through articles and websites. This one will be the first reference I advise to anyone who's starting their investing journey.

Great content as always. Im with you on people misinterpreting the Money quote from the Bible. It's not money is the root of evil but the love of money or making money the master of your life is the root of all evil. Keep up the good work 👏

This is excellent, thank you. I've just watched the first ten minutes but already I'm hooked on your clear, concise explanations and the systematic way you build things up from the basics. So many "beginner guides" just get bogged down in masses of unnecessary terminology but you make it very simple. I've been managing my own money for 30+ years but I'm going to show this to my sister who desperately needs a financial education ! Thanks :)

You've got it wrong about 'Drift'. It's a bit like your point in your LTA video where you said: 'would you turn down a pay rise just because of extra tax?'. But for your equities/bonds balance you make it sound like a bad thing - 'to be fixed!' or 'don't let it happen in the first place!' - when your equities do so well that the balance has changed from 50:50 to 80:20. NO! Once your equities have soared to 80%, that 40% crash is more than covered! And - as we know - the equities will get back on trend at some point relatively soon....... Now it is true that equities can have over-good runs for a decade or more at a time and we know that 'lost decades' come along every 20-25 years or so. And it would be good to anticipate them IF we could) and rebalance. But that's a different story - about market timing, rather than genuine 'rebalancing'.

The point is about risk. Just because equities have significantly gained in previous years, doesn't mean you want to allow your portfolio to become heavily weighted to equities. Most would like to review and maintain their portfolio based on their risk profile. As we reach retirement, risk aversion will prob increase. The portfolio may become more risk averse. Who wants a 15% drop in assets before cashing it in in 2 years, for instance?

Absolutely brilliant video! I’ve been adding a very small amount of money into an index linked pension I started in the early 90s. I’m now 50 and I feel, after watching your video, that I really want/need to take action! I know now that I haven’t been paying enough into it, and to that end, it’s probably not the right type of pension? I wonder, as it’s probably not performed that well do I look at the transfer value and consider transferring it into a passive fund, obviously paying more into that fund monthly over the next 10-15 years? Or, do I see if it’s possible to transfer its value into my work place pension? I have a state pension pot, and a work place pension (4 years worth) and really want to pay off the remainder of my mortgage ASAP too. I’ve been over paying my mortgage for the last 4 years because I managed to sell a small business I had. I have a cash isa but feel it needs to be a stocks and shares one, which I might go for next April? I’ve always been good with money but the education I’ve received via your video highlight the need to have my money working harder for me! Thanks Pete . 👏🏻🙏🏼

Be great to see a video on which sipp providers pay interest on cash? or how best to store cash in a sipp so inflation does not eat it?
@MeaningfulMoney
@MeaningfulMoney 2 жыл бұрын
Best to hold as little cash as possible in a SIPP, unless you’re drawing down. A true SIPP will allow you to have bank accounts with all manner of different providers, but a mainstream SIPP won’t.

so say, an asset returned 18%, what is stopping the company passing on only 6% to the customer?
@MeaningfulMoney

The law. The assets inside the fund are held in a kind of trust for you. The rules on reporting and measurement of performance are crystal clear. What you’re talking about would essentially be fraud.

My works pension, has lost more than my employer and I have paid in over the last 6 months. e.g. over £1200 paid in since December and the fund is still worth £500 less now, than it was in December. That's why people don't trust pensions.
@MeaningfulMoney
@MeaningfulMoney 2 жыл бұрын
Nope - people don’t trust pensions because they don’t understand them. Every time money has gone in since December, you’ve been buying shares or whatever at lower and lower prices, meaning you’re buying more of them. When markets come around - and they ALWAYS do - you’ll see a marked increase in the value of your holding. What you’re doing is exactly the right strategy - keep buying regularly, and some of it with money that isn’t even yours! Depending on how old you are, this may be your first serious market correction. There will be many more in future - keep investing and your future self will thank you.
