Storyline in my perspective: basically metal sonic was returning to eggman hoping to have an task, but many badniks got in his way so he had to destroy them but he didn’t want egg man to find out, when metal sonic encounter the eye and the eye explained something about abilities, metal sonic thought he could finally beat sonic and be worthy to eggman, metal sonic accepted it and went through the Challenges, but when he got into some chamber by the eye in chemical plant, metal sonic got twisted up and his programming was now cleared it was only anger agony and pride to kill his enemies who get in his way, but what happened to eggman probably he got killed off screen by metal sonic or the eye.
