There are many comments asking how this waterer works. It's only a guess as it isn't possible to see the water level inside the larger pipe. However, from what I can tell the video shows two pipes; smaller inner pipe, (for air) and larger outter pipe, (for water). The inner pipe passes through a divider. The divider at 5:26 has a small hole drilled in the center. This hole allows water to pass through slowly; (due to atmospheric pressure), from the upper reservoir to the lower dispenser "U" shaped area. The divider is placed, (inside the larger pipe) at the same height position as the desired water level for the dog to drink 7:26. This level also covers the bottom opening of the smaller inner pipe. When the dog drinks, the water level drops in the "U" which allows air into the "U" and up through the inner pipe. Atmospheric pressure pushes on the water in the reservoir allowing water to pass through the small hole in the divider. The water will fill the "U" until it covers the bottom opening of the inner smaller pipe which stops the water from filling and spilling out.

It is also very important for the top cap to seal air tight, and the hole in the divider to be small. As it will be running out while you fill it until you get the top cap back on.

And for those who are still confused how it works… it’s quick, but he first drills a small hole in the center of the divider before making a second hole for the inner pipe/hose. This is where water passes through and the inner hose allows air for the slow distribution of water. So the divider has two holes… one small one at the very center and a second which the inner pipe passes through!

I like the principle of controlling the water level really cool. I designed my own water dispenser before watching this but incorporated a system to automatically fill the chamber too rather than manually filling the reservoir. Simply I added a toilet bowl all in one fill valve with float and connected it to water supply. My design didn't use his method of controlling the water level at the feeder outlet to the dog either. I created a port and installed a hose on my water reservoir 2 inches below the water fill line and ran it to the dogs water bowl placing it 2 inches below the water fill line. This way the water level in the bowl controls the filling of the bowl and the toilet valve float unit controls the filling of the reservoir. No heating up of PVC (which releases toxic fume from what I read) just drill two holes and attach PVC and you are good. My unit allows for multiple hoses to multiple dog water bowls attached to the same reservoir.

I liked the fact that you put up work for the project but I honestly do not see the need for such engineering solution.... A much simpler solution is the following: Simply keep the outer PVC assembly as is and create a second sealing cup. Then: 1. seal the water output when you want to fill in water. 2. Open the top cup and fill in water. 3. Put the top cup again and remove the bottom cup. As soon as the pet drinks water the air will go to the top releasing water at the bottom. What do you think? :)

@@cgmejia I think he meant just to use another cap. So one can use it to close the bottom opening, while fills with water through the top opening. When the pipe gets full, you close the top again, and remove the cap from the bottom. It works

We are out in the Arizona desert and i fill a poultry waterer for the local birds, rabbits and quail..... luckily no coyotes yet and your technique would be a much better solution for me.... I need to watch it a few more times to get the concept of why the water doesn't all dump out the bottom

I think I know what is missing, in the materials I see that one of the small tubes is missing. The big one is the respirator and the small one supplies the water, but in the video you only see how you put on the respirator. I think you missed it. The small pipe is just the vent for air to escape, allowing the water to displace the u-shaped end. once the water reaches the vent it stops

@@bhekisfruitful488 bro its simple. You see that small hole made by a nail. If you dont close the top end with cap the water will ooz out like gravity action. The small hole prevents quick water flowdown . So you get enough time to refill it. Then you close the top so no air going in so the water flowdown stops. Then when the dog drinks water the water level drops and air can pass through the inner small pvc, the water will flow down untill the water level comes as earlier and hit the inner pvc down end. Phew I think you understood now. If not i will explain again 😅😅😅

I’m frustrated. So, I built this. I am having an issue when I close the top. It seals but wont refill. As soon as I open the top it overflows. Is my vent pipe leaking?

I think I know what the issue is. My elbows are different than yours. They have more of a drop. Yours are basically perpendicular. My air gets trapped in the elbow at the back because the front has to drop very low before air can pass from the front to the back. I bet if I drill a hole just below the diaphragm and above the bottom of the vent pipe it will fill the front to the top.

@@cgmejia I drilled a small hole into the side of the elbow that connects into the upright pipe. But I drilled it below the line where I glued the diaphragm. I had to make an educated guess where the diaphragm was because it was all glued up. So it was a blind drilling. I used a tiny bit too.

Ive seen many versions of this on the tube, but this one seems more efficient. Would it be possible to replace the copper with CPVC 1/2"? also non of the versions have a way to know when it needs to be refilled. maybe a clear tube version would solve this problem at the same time you could make sure the water environment is clean.

You don't even need the small tube in there it serves no purpose. You could have drilled a 1/4 inch hole at the top of the lid and that would be enough for air flow but regardless air bubbles would make their way up the pipe as the dogs drink n the water level will always stay the same cause it's called gravity. You people must not have a lot of knowledge to b impressed n fooled by such a pointless video. Oh n don't worry bout him putting alcohol in the dogs water that's real good n health for their livers. If he had just drilled a hole the two openings of the pipe would have the same atmospheric pressure so all the water he pours in would just spill at the bottom. The mechanism with the small tube keeps the pressure difference. This guys tutorial is worth dog shit without correct display of that mechanism anyways.

I do like your engineering work. It does look very nice. However, I can see, it will take awhile to make just one (i.e., cutting the pipes and otherpieces, gluing, painting, etc.) I would imagined, you may had been working for a few hours....? Especially, you have to be very articulated. For me, I like alittle more simplicity and quickly to changing water, etc. Lol. But, thank you giving us more other option.

Yes. But vacuum is a partial answer. Water normally levels itself. But this one looks like it just refills to a certain level always (hence the "automatic" in the name) to a level thats is lower! Very very interesting indeed! Very crafty! 👍👍👍
