I appreciate your use of the term "Scout" and "Soldier" to describe mindsets. I believe those terms will resonate with most listeners, particularly as you have described your intent. Ironically, it is the warrior class (Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors) who actually embody the Scout mindset! US military education admonishes the notion of becoming married to a plan. Using the philosophy of the "70 percent solution" the military insists that the battlespace is far too complex and ever-changing. To deal with this reality, military professionals are taught to question their assumptions and seek new information (e.g. intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) in order to continually adjust the plan of operations. In short, plan to be wrong, and adjust accordingly.
@Elmore207

I imagine the naming is just as much, if not more, to do with questioning/disobeying orders. I'm not sure you guys do very much of the latter. Striving to rationally evaluate your orders in terms of global utility, and then deciding whether to carry them out based on your conclusion, wouldn't lend itself well to the military (which says plenty about that institution).
@christopherlarsen7788
@christopherlarsen7788 3 жыл бұрын
@@Elmore207 - Your comments couldn't be more timely! There is more than a smidgen of truth to your claim that the US military too often fails to question the orders in relation to the emerging/changing context. But that claim belies the reality of modern warfare and the martial philosophy of Auftragstaktik - which has been taught to US Army and Marine officers and sergeants since I enlisted back in 1985. Indeed, Auftragstaktik harkens back to the First World War when in 1916 the Germany Army institutionalized this philosophy. Today, the US military refers to that same martial philosophy as Mission Command - standing in juxtaposition to literally "order-based command." And guess what? Mission Command gives junior battlefield leaders the expressed right to disobey orders!!! Here is a bit of light reading on this concept from research I was involved with a few years ago on this very subject. The article is published in the US Army Infantry Magazine... “Cognitive Dominance Through the Engagement Decision Matrix” (APR-JUN 2017). US Army Infantry Magazine. www.benning.army.mil/infantry/magazine/issues/2017/APR-JUN/pdf/12)Larsen-EDM_txt.pdf So, yeah. US military professionals do a surprising amount of questioning and disobeying orders. And the result has produced less battlefield casualties of our troops, and indeed we've managed to kill less of the enemy by virtue of killing the correct targets instead.
@Elmore207
@Elmore207 3 жыл бұрын
@@christopherlarsen7788It was genuinely interesting to read your comment and browse the link you provided - I wasn't aware that the US military used any degree of malleable command structure. The reason people find it difficult to have a scout mindset at the same time as having social confidence is because you need to be very intelligent and knowledgeable to pull it off. You need to know as much or more about whatever you’re talking about than your audience. If you are uncertain and don’t have good probability estimates of all of the details then you will be easily challenged. Also the audience needs to be intelligent and well informed enough to follow along. It works great if you’re an expert talking to other intelligent people, which I think is what many of us aspire to.

I had a similar reaction as you to the video. I think it might be appropriate to say that the audience needs to have the intellectual curiosity for the subject matter to take in non absolute statements. I also think there is an additional skill of communication to frame the ideas for the general public, similar to Neil Degrasse Tyson comparing the cost of the US space program to how much americans spend each year on chapstick. Its not that we just need to be more knowledgeable in the topic, but we also need to have broader knowledge to create good metaphors for the general audience and that's a lot of work.

An excellent explanation, thank you! I find in fact that the scout mindset helps improve social confidence because I never have to lie or exaggerate. Lying causes an instinctive fear response, it's nerve-wracking to try and trick people, and that nervousness diminishes social confidence. It's so much more relaxing to be honest about uncertainty and embrace it - and being more relaxed helps me be more persuasive. Win-win!

Yes. Thank you for such an eloquent articulation of the idea. When I was doing my pedagogical subject teacher's qualification, in Finland, one of the students was quite obsessed with the thought that a teacher should always project an aura of being a _knowledgeable_ authority rather than display any disposition of uncertainty. It just seemed like a ridiculous view to hold, given the natural limitations of humans, including teachers. If anything, teachers should be guides in how to seek knowledge, not a walking encyclopedia from a seemingly impossible future where everything is known.

I agree with everything you say as always (and really looking forward to the book), but your mention of the word "influential" in the title made me think of social media. I'll use medicine as an example simply because that's what I know, but it's clearly central to science to understand uncertainty's role and appropriately express confidence (or lack thereof), but because that can be an unsatisfying answer for a patient in need of something to help them, they will gravitate towards the quack who can be 100% certain that their treatment will work. Social confidence might have more relevance in the business world, such as in the example you present of Bezos, but while I agree you don't NEED certainty to become influential, on medical topics being certain is a surefire route to popularity. The doctor being very measured in what she says online, explaining there is uncertainty to the treatments she gives, will lose out to the doctor who says with great conviction that masks don't work and vaccines are harmful.
@naveej
@naveej 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your differentiation depending on the industry you are in. Something I am curious about is: How would you describe the weight of negative outcomes for the doctor who gives 100% certainty vs the more 'honest/upfront' doctor who gives a realistic evaluation? How does it affect the credibility of both doctors, especially over time? I feel like the 100% certain doctor will 'only' win over patients in the short term.

I find it highly interesting that you self-identify with the "measured, uncertain" online doctor, when you yourself don't fall into that category at all! And you mix subjects to boot (to muddy the waters?) Vaccines are wonderful things, once they've been subject to the proper clinical testing; everyone knows that. They've saved and prolonged billions of lives. Everyone also knows that masks (as well as social distancing, school and business closures, curfews, and partial lockdowns) have no effect on the spread of infectious viral respiratory diseases. All historical empirical data to date (clinical studies and observational data) show this to be true. And it is true for obvious evolutionary reasons. But it's nice to see you here listening to someone who is logical and bayesian; maybe it will rub off on you! Cheers, doc.

@@thereligionofrationality8257 Did Medlife Crisis really indicate that he self-identifies with the "measured, uncertain" online doctor? I can see that one might assume, as I feel that you might've, that a person would self-identify with what they describe as better or superior. Although it's a sensible assumption, I think we should be wary of making such assumptions. Often we can find ourselves assuming the worst when someone really only tried to be helpful. I don't think he was trying to be superior or anything, I feel he was just trying to add to the conversation. Also, as someone who watched some of his videos about the covid pandemic, I didn't feel that he was too confident in his views, but I may be forgetting something.

It has really amazed me to see how elaborate defense mechanisms work on a precognitive level to "create the reality that they want/expect to see." Breaking through that is far more tricky than just "pointing out the truth," because as they see it their distortion IS the truth. I've seen false memories of events created, and the contortions people get in trying to defend them, not even because they are malicious, but because they have too much invested in the delusion to abandon it. Trauma has a lot to do with this process, and thus these people are in many ways victims of their own minds, despite also gaslighting those around them. They often times rely on the social confidence you speak of in order to make the whole mess work, responding with a lot of force very quickly in an attempt to overwhelm the subject. Being ruthlessly honest with myself and scrupulous in my information gathering has lead to great epistemic confidence, which has allowed me to stand my ground in the face of the onslaught. It's still difficult in the moment to counter the social confidence, but I feel anchored in a foundation of truth that makes it at least possible to orient myself in the maelstrom of misinformation. Thanks for being an advocate for rational thought process: I think the theme of the book is a great example of how to approach an "enemy position." I look forward to reading it.

Sadly, as the Scout Mindset gives you the best possible foundation to build upon (reality). Many people are not prepared for it and they are emotionally too week to handle the burden of truth. I spent several years as a technical director in a tech company and university professor. In my experience, admitting right up front with comfort and directness when you don't know something for sure is liberating and builds trust. Saying, "I don't know. I'll look into it and see what we can do." or, "I've got an idea, but I'll need to dig into it to know if it will actually work." or when a student is having a problem, "I don't know how you can do X. You might try A, B, and C. If they don't work, they might give you some ideas for other directions to explore." Yes, I'm an "expert" but the nature of the work I do and the things I teach is that new problems pop up all the time. The skill/experience is not in having the answers, but the willingness to look for solutions and having a useful mental toolbox that help find them, and accepting that some of the exploration will lead to dead ends. I'm looking forward to reading your book.

A lot of people tend to have this notion that blind belief and devotion is going to convince others to join you but it's your honesty that'll actually get them to trust you. Nothing sucks people in more than someone who is willing to take an objective look at the situation. Someone who is truly influential will also never allow their confidence to cloud their own judgment and will acknowledge their intellectual limitations. Of course, it's also important to stay focused and determined to succeed.

your take is off, idealistic. else how did so many fall for the grandstanding of someone who clearly was so self-centered that he constantly demanded loyalty and praise? his needy personality guaranteed he'd be a lousy leader, but the appeal to racism and resentment ensnared millions. if things worked as you suggest, such a fraud would never have had a chance against truth-tellers.

Hey Julia, I ran across your channel recently and have been loving your videos. This is interesting. I always wondered if it was just me, because this holds true for me. For instance, the professors I respected the most were the ones who would admit they didn’t have the answer to a question. I had one who would say something like, “that’s a great question, and I don’t know the answer, but if you research it and find out, please let me know, because I’d be interested.” I really respected him. I had a different professor who would sometimes look annoyed when I’d ask questions he didn’t have the answer to. I wasn’t trying to make him look bad, I was just genuinely curious.
