Thank you for such an interesting and instructive video, I've really been impressed with the number of electronic devices that facilitate the complicated work of measurement, especially the last gauging the planer, it's really amazing. Very grateful for your video, received a warm greeting from Madrid.

Hi Peter, good to see you share my passion for accuracy! I’ve had a Stanley 8M tape measure for years and it's great when roughing out my timber stock prior to the fine-tuning available with the more precise iGaging tools. Having the ability to measure and check your work with confidence makes our furniture making so much more accurate, productive and less stressful. Great informative video as ever. I will have to add the iGaging miniMag Height Gauge to my website, I missed that little gem. Cheers Peter

hi peter thanks for another great video. I managed to get a wagner moisture meter from ebay the other day, and its great. I wasn't optimistic of finding one being in the uk so couldn't believe it when it came up. As im a serious timber scavenger its going to be invaluable, and if not for your video on the device id have never known about them so thank you.

Hi Peter, thanks for another interesting and helpful video. I share your desire for accurate measuring and marking tools, and went through all of mine a few years back, testing them in a similar manner to you and throwing away anything that didn't measure up :-)

I was in the same boat as you with those beloved squares. I have two identical to yours who were my Grandfathers, both are out around .5-1mm, gutted!

Hi Llyr, It is a sad feeling. But, at least now we can measure these things and sort it out. When my grandfather needed a new tool he had to walk 5 miles across the Welsh hills to get it. Peter

Very helpful, and I've now watched a few of your. But just a thought - could you do some that aren't simply advertising space for products?
@NewBritWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Hi Don, People are always asking me about the kit that I use and also about bits of kit that they would like o buy. I try and help by borrowing kit like that - I do not do advertising and am certainly getting nothing for mentioning products that I use. Peter

Hello Peter. Another good video. At the 10:25 mark you show a Festool tablesaw in the video with the igaging angle gauge. What is the model number for your Festool tablesaw? I've never seen one available in the U.S. like that.
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, It is the Festool CMS-TS which is a universal base unit (legs and a frame) into which one places a unit for a particular type of tool (saw - TS, Router - OF and so on). I do not think that the CMC-TS is available in North America but many people buy them from Europe. The saw used in my CMS-TS is the standard TS55 which can be inserted or removed in under 2 minutes which gives it a dual function. Peter

I inherited some woodworkers squares (Marples I think) from my dad years ago. He was in the trade and warned me that, from the factory, they're only guaranteed straight and square on the inside edges.

I wonder if using the term "Gubbins" is a reference to Sir Colin Gubbins the British special operations officer from WWII. Many people have never heard of him due to the fact that most of his exploits where classified secret until well into the 1970s. He was a brilliant spymaster who oversaw many inventions of war that were instrumental in defeating the Nazis. If you want a fascinating read, look for "Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: The Mavericks Who Plotted Hitler's Defeat" by Giles Milton
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, The term is old French from "gobbins" which meant a piece, part or slice. However, you have mentioned an interesting piece of history and I will endeavour to get around to reading the book in due course. Cheers. Peter

I think I'll have another look online for an igaging marking/cutting gauge in the UK. I was very keen on getting one about 6 months ago but couldn't find one that wasn't drastically overpriced due to scarcity in the UK. Any ideas Peter?

Jonto Dickens Hi Jonto, Try Woodworkers Workshop as they are increasing their range of iGaging stock (they also have some other very nice stuff). Peter

Hi Peter, accuracy has always been my Achilles Heel and I have been investing in good kit to try and improve it. Small point, when you were using the "magic cube" should you not zero it on the flat bed of your tool before transferring it to the blade?
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, You zero the cube on the surface that you then use as your reference for whatever angle you are measuring or seeking. On a mitre saw setup, you could zero it on the base and then see where the mitre saw thinks it is when in the upright (90 deg) setting. More usefully you start with it zero'd on the saw blade at 90 deg and then go from there. Just keep in mind that it is the relative angle that you are seeking. Peter

I see youre using the knob on the festool to make big jumps. if im going zero to 45° i kinda toss my kapex side to side. i figure it has to be tough. i paid enough for it and it saves me time. Do you think im doing wrong by my kapex? im not slamming it or anything. just hustling trying to make a buck fixing other peoples mistakes. i bought that saw, made 1 cut, felt a huge difference in how stable it felt (aside from the other great features) and sold the dust throwing, large, heavy, hard to bevel from the back 12 inch dewalt sliding compound miter saw and never looked back. sorry to get off topic. im a newer woodworker (painting is my main trade) and am soaking in all the info i can. people think im a finish carpenter now when they see my work.. festool plays a big part.
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Hi William, Yes, the Festool kit is tough but it would be wrong to throw any tool around or abuse it if you can avoid it. Festool has transformed my woodworking as well. Every tool is part of the "System" and it is easy to see why so many people like it. Peter

If you go to your local trading standards department you can check your measure against their local measure which is compared against the nation measure standard. It’s accurate.
