If the surface area above the funnel to collect water is larger then more water would be collected in the funnel within the same given time so there has to be a standard for the surface area of the equipment otherwise a lot of variance would be recorded.

Measuring precipitation's terminal velocity as it differs because of varying air resistance, and then using that information to identify it as either rain, drizzle, or snow is simply brilliant.

Trust the Brits to explain things so well and so clearly. I went from not having a clue to getting an idea of how rain measurements and forecasting works. Nice one this guy!!

I'm studying for an official exam right now, and meteorology is a branch of Geography which I particularly hated because my teachers make it so complex. This video is a life~saver. He's precise in his explanation, and goes slowly up the ladder (from simple concepts to “complex” ones) making the bulk easier to comprehend. Thank you so much!💌

I don't get it, surely the wider the rain collection bucket, the more rain you will collect? Like a 50cm diameter bucket will obviously collect more rain than a tiny 5cm diameter bucket, so how do you remove that variable from the equation?
@feekeebooh8 жыл бұрын
i think it has to do with the time spent collecting those amount of rain. so in example a 1inch bucket can collect 10mm of rain in an hour, and a 2 inch bucket can collect 20mm of rain in a hour, when you compute them, they have the same amount of rain collected in 1 hr, then you'll be able to compute the amount of rain per month, per quarter or per year, that's how i understand it :)
@Jordansmith-mc7wi7 жыл бұрын
Sk3elly late reply but it doesn't matter how wide the area the rain is measured on it's about the depth of rain
@TrainsfanAlex60607 жыл бұрын
Well if the collection bucket is wider, it has a bigger volume to fill. It all equals out.
@Jordansmith-mc7wi7 жыл бұрын
Alex McDougall but the height of the rainfall is still the same if the same rainfall falls in.

I’m so confused by this. Wouldn’t a normal rainy day fill up that entire bottle?
@CuriosityKitty-j5j17 күн бұрын
Not sure , I suppose it depends of how heavy the rain is, is it windy , misty rain etcetc but just a guess
@monisha70074 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the rainfall collect also depend on the diameter of the funnel or raingauge? Like the 5 inch diameter rain gauge.
@willipine18633 жыл бұрын
it depends on it that's why its called a gauge , you cannot alter it's diameter

You collected a full glass bottle of water but you use only half of the water in the bottle to measure the rainfall. How does it work? Can I just go to the pond in front of my yard and take some water to measure the rainfall?
@kiethz82015 жыл бұрын
Just stick a bucket in your yard out in the open.Away from trees or anything that would stop the rain. When it is done raining just use a measuring tape or ruler to see how deep the water in the pail is. That is about as accurate as you will get. Of course the top and bottom of the pail would need to be the same width as well. .

there is no time limit. If you wish to measure the 'annual' rainfall at a certain location, keep the bucket open for 1 year.

Made it more simple, total area ,total volume up to range of exosphere's from center of earth ,total solid angle ,total sun rays in one years ,total global temperature obtained by specific area ,now we have a correlation between all two rows of data and than average of all that Carl Pearson coefficient's ,so we know that ultimate dimensional boundary of rain

I still don't understand the system. I watched a video of someone filming 50mm in a hour. I live in Bergen and we just broke a 40 year old record with the rainiest July month. It was 260mm. Now, 260mm doesn't seem that much in a month if there was a place that had 50mm in a hour. Btw, Bergen is one of the most rainiest cities in the world and believe me, it rained a lot in July. Think we had 4 days without any rain. So what seems more right? 50mm in a hour or 260mm in a month?

Still i found this methods are not accurate. It is better to invent new methods by using some sophisticate instrument like in Satellites which will measure by reading clouds density, size, wind flow, etc and even giving the details of how much MM of rainfall will happen and in which direction and how much amount of each area will get, etc. It can be used for more accurate rainfall warning to all public. Because the method used checks only for certain area total rainfall. But in actual every location receives different level of rainfall. Why i am saying this bcoz, on 26th July 2005, Mumbai observatory noted - 944mm of rainfall. But in whole Maharashtra state in different areas, it was more than what recorded.

@jeanlucpepin6 жыл бұрын
No, I think this thinner gage is calibrated to hold (when it is full) exactly the amount of water corresponding to one inch (2.54cm) of water falling in the 5 inch larger cylinder. Using the one inch gage, one can get a much more precise reading for the amount of rain, in this case 3.2 mm (it is a bit confusing because he only takes some of the water. He should have poured all out, emptying the little gage everytime it is full and adding everytime 1 inch more.)

You lost credibility when you jumped from imperial (5 inches) to metric (mm of rain). Why mix your measurement type?
@SmevMev5 жыл бұрын
That's completely normal in the UK. For instance, in a pub or bar, you only ever buy beer/cider in pints, whereas wine and spirits are only sold in ml. Whether you use metric or imperial is often just a matter of which is more convenient and it's usually just assumed you can convert between them, if you have to.
