You will learn the science of measuring work, power and energy expenditure as part of the exercise physiology component of the NESTA personal trainer and master personal training courses.
An understanding of terms work and power is necessary in order to compute human work output and the associated exercise efficiency.
▪ Work is defined as the product of force times distance: Work = force x distance
▪ Power is defined as work divided by time: Power = work ÷ time
Energy expenditure refers to the amount of energy an individual uses to maintain essential body functions (respiration, circulation, digestion) and as a result of physical activity. Total daily energy expenditure is determined by resting or basal metabolic rate (BMR), food-induced thermogenesis, and energy expended as a result of physical activity.
How is work related to power and energy?
Force exerted on an object over a distance does work. Work can increase energy, and energy can do work. Power is the rate at which work is done.
