I have watched hundreds of hours of video footage of hunting, deer, caribou, moose, bear and other species over the last five years. I have come to this conclusion, if I could go on only one guided hunt before I die, it would be with Brian Callaghan. I would not care if we even saw the target species, this is one special person.

@@Bigjohnson1515 About what? Meateater cussing more than usual in season 8 or the fact I don't watch TV except for hunting videos? I do the later because watching the filth on TV corrupts my character. If I watch all the episodes of hunting public for instance I get no filth such as sex, cussing, immorality, homosexuality etc. Just pure clean entertainment. I don't want to end up on the 6 o'clock news for no sins I committed by not keeping myself from bad influence. It works for me man. Before I was a Christian I was into gangs and getting deeper into drugs and gangbanging etc. Till a retired airforce high ranking soldier took me hunting. I left gangs after that first hunt. This changed my life like I said it works for me.

As an adult onset hunter that got lucky a few times early on, and a ROUGH adjustment back to reality (years of tag soup), it really means a lot to see a hunter I really look up to go through similar struggles. The way that buck mule kicked and was hunched up with his ears pinned back before the second are all tell tale signs he was hit. That being said though we don't know how much searching was done off camera and is just a bad situation all the way around. Cal readily admitted how much that can play into the confidence on a hunt and what a mind game it becomes. Props to Cal and the meateater crew for posting this even if though it didn't go the way that anybody would want.

I love these "real world" hunts! I've tried to explain to my kids and live by the words "A successful hunt isn't measured by the trophy on the wall, or the meat in the freezer! It's measured by the knowledge gained and the memories created!" Your video's are VERY helpful in instilling these ethics. Thank you so much for the quality of videos produced. Too often videos are filled with sponsor hype and hunters who change their caps often while trying to sell over hyped products. Your subtle approach speaks volumes without cramming it down our throats. Very tastefully done on your part! Its doesn't go unnoticed.

Re-watched the first shot in slow mo a bunch of times...only thing I can figure is that he hit a branch or the dirt way in front of the deer and it got hit by a bit of shrapnel or rock shards. It got hit by something, just nothing lethal (assuming Cal put in some effort looking for blood).

Revisiting this 3 years later.... Cal is still the stand-out preseter in the MeatEater outfit...and I still think that first "miss" was a bad hit. *that said, showing the ugly parts of this 'game'(misses/self-doubt, worry for the animal), is important and real. I thank MeatEater for keeping it real.

We know Cal is a great hunter even when he misses once (EVERY hunter does sooner or later), but it's just nice to see that hunting isn't always easy. Hunting, fishing and trapping. Trapping must worked out as evidenced by the mouse. Been there done that too. Skunked on an elk hunt returned to camp to find success in the mouse trap. It was my idea in the moment of frustration and I ended up getting posed with a beer in one hand, a case of said at my feet next to a cold fire, and the mouse on the end of a stick.
