I use fine smooth and like Sandvic files but last time had to settle for Nicholson’s brand. It has been about six months since I bought the last batch and still have some left in stock, funny how they last when you’re the only one using them…

@billdlv I think, the coarse Scotchbrite pads are great! Haven't used any in a long time, i would use them to further the polish grade, after the paper if needed...

Keith, I love your videos, but they are a problem...I am becoming addicted to them! I thought I knew a lot about machining, but I learn at least one thing from every video. Thanks for sharing!

It is due to the surface finish and a bit of taper in the cut. The lathe has many miles on it and is not as tight as it once was. Take my practice as a reminder that all machines are not as tight as you wish they were. ;{)-----

@msr203 I think I was about .003 to .004 over on that pin before the filing. It all depends on the quality of surface finish, on how much I leave shy

Thanks, Keith! Yea, files last years when treated with respect, their main killer is abuse! I use trashed ones to check hardness. I've been longing for Grobet (Swiss) American pattern files, but they are pricy! I like Lutz long ferrule birch handles. The 6" Stihl single cut smooth flat hand files with two safe edges made for lowering the lands on chainsaw chains when sharpening them are very good for deburring, but too small for use on the lathe. I'll check out Sandvik files.

I don't do it. but, I suppose it's a personal choice. Sickens me to think of the industrial accidents I have been around, fortunately, have avoided them myself. It happens so quick and the damage is just devastating. Mr. Fenner- I'm not being critical at all- you've been around this stuff long enough and experienced enough, you know what you are doing.

I like a long angle lathe file, good tip about avoiding pinning - I've seen good files ruined that way.

When moving the tail stock over do you need to release the clamp to the bed/ways? Didn't see you do that in the vid.

Keith, I just discovered your channel and love watching you do these odd projects... At 7:44 though, I couldn't help but imagine "If this man ever snapped a file, he would be dead"... Wrapped up in a lathe is never a good thing!

Hello Mr Fenner, I checked out the chuck again, the runout was caused by a worn scroll, the chuck is to be replaced and hopefully a machine service, thankyou for your valuable advice. Stewart.

Hey keith, This Might be a Dumb Question, But with the parting Tool should the Top of the Blade Be centered or a fraction Lower / higher. Slow speed high speed. I just never feel real Comfortable. The bit tends to grab when getting towards about half way through, either Alloy or Steel. :)

Hi Keith, I thought I remembered a vid where you commented on filing in the lathe! You mentioned using single cut mill files, but what tooth coarseness? FYI, Apex Tool Group (owner of the Nicholson brand) outsourced mfg. to Mexico and Brazil last year. I've been happy with the new old stock USA made Nicholsons I've found, but I've avoided buying new offshored ones as I've heard they are softer. Have you bought any new ones lately/noticed any difference in how they wear?

Keith, another fan. I glean so much from your videos. Just curious why you did not duplicate the relief in the center of the pin. Is that not suppose to help hold and supply grease in the contact areas? Keep up the excellent.

I use diesel grease to remove grit when filing on the lathe, as well as emery paper.... stops things clogging up

Keith, LOVE your videos! As many others have stated, I'm addicted. I laughed when I saw this video because I need to do the same thing to my father's bobcat power hoe attachment. One question, I've never seen you use a dog and faceplate... Do you avoid them for some reason?

You appear to be used to your setup and know what you are doing, but there is no way I would work that file that close to the chuck with long sleeves.

Filing and sanding on the lathe using long-sleeved shirt is very dangerous.

You scare me with wearing long sleeves and using your right hand on the handle! I was taught to use the left hand on the handle when filing on a lathe, as a safety feature. The shop where I worked bought only short sleeved shirts for employees.
