0:39 : "why would we make the pilot exposed to danger or incoming fire " the answer is simple and given to us in portal 2 ads : to prevent the destruction of costly equipment. If you can kill the pilot, you won t need to destroy the mech. Thus you prevent the destruction of the mecha :D ( for those wondering, look the ad for the boots )

The next step would doing a Mech where the pilot is only the head, or a Mech that is the head of its pilot (like that one bad ending of System Shock)
