He could still not surpass sonic. mecha sonic, pretty much his own being, able to absorb chaos energy. In smbz he truly proved himself, he is no longer just a copy, mecha sonic was a hedgehog shaped killing machine built by robotnik using sonic as a reference and inspiration, besides that he's pretty much just an M1-abrams, an A-10-warthog and a fucking miniature nuclear reactor all in one. Then metalix, even more so his own being. He just so happened to look like sonic, he takes all of that and multiplies it TIMES 3.
