Here's the thing about licenses. Maybe they meant something at some point. But whether it's teachers, electricians, mechanics, engineers, doctors, pilots, etc, having a license only means you maybe took some classes, took a test, maybe worked under someone with a license to get experience, and paid the state money. A license doesn't mean you're competent anymore. I trust recommendations and demonstrated competence over a license. I think Wes has demonstrated competence, and more importantly he knows what questions to ask before jumping in.

I loved your soapbox comments!... I found myself at 46 years of age and little construction experience and only $3000 to my name needing a home for my family, I built a sawmill, cut and milled trees from the forest, built a wood drying kiln, dried and planed the lumber, bought used tools and materiel's and built a 3 story home on a rock bluff overlooking a river.... We have had over 10 weddings in our living room because people love our home and tell us it is the most beautiful place they know of.... If I/We can do something like this then anyone who wants something as bad as we wanted a home can accomplish their own dream.... The hardest part was deciding to start doing something and stop reciting to myself all of the reasons I could never succeed.... A leap of Faith.....

I'm a 68 year old DIY'er who does it all. A retired city fireman. I just finished out a huge shop the previous owner here never finished. I wired a lot of it. Hung the interior sheathing on the 18 foot ceilings and walls. I did the door installs, rebuilt the huge bay doors and replace the hardware and springs, installed the flooring in a storeroom, office and toilet, built the cabinets and benches and the full shop air system with a huge compressor in its own outside building which I also built. I painted for so many hours, I lost count. I had to buy a used scissor lift to accomplish a lot of it. I'm not fully done yet but in the year I've been here, it's been nothing short of amazing and rewarding. Good for you Wes. I think you did a fine job. I had that same 80's vintage Craftsman table saw for 40 years up until recently. I enjoyed every minute of it. A great series. I love your videos.

I’m an accountant by trade and I’m renovating my master bathroom, my friends think I’m some kind of god by doing all the work. Nice work all around.

Accountancy isn't, by definition, a trade. It's a "Profession". The fact that some of your friends need to call a Tradesman to change a lightbulb hardly endorse their rating of you as a "god" for some simple diy tasks but it strongly shows how underrated our Craftsmen and Trades Professionals are. I take your point though, it is very satisfying to make or fix things, and how rewarding it is to help other people! Love + peace xx

Your last few sentences were the most important message you've put on the internet (that I know of) and I totally agree! I've bee teaching my grandkids basic - and occasionally specialist - skills since they were 2 and 3 years old just like you do with your kids. They are now 14 and 16 and don't EVER consider the possibility that they can't do something or learn how to. Most recently, they did the concrete blockwork on my new workshop completely on their own - after me teaching them and labouring for them for a few hours (over several days). Then I caught COVID and they were confident enough to finish the job by themselves. Mixing mortar, laying bocks, setting up scaffolding and cleaning up. Who'd have thought young teenagers in 2024 would be able to.... Something is seriously wrong with our society. You nailed the reasons!

Cobblers of the world unite! We use what’s available from our hoard of unwanted or leftover materials, measuring thrice, cutting once, staring at our progress, and changing the blueprints of our minds to improve on our project. Always results in a unique and durable product. The safety of our family is foremost, slapping something together usually results in doing it again to get it right, hopefully not because of an injury. Your thinking through this project will give those who visit some Easter eggs when they view the finished product. Not everyone has to be licensed to be a craftsman, curiosity and determination will do just fine. Excellent work, maybe a little feng shui involved with the door color, eh? Indoor/carpet till you make a permanent decision, enjoy the new space! 😊

I couldn't have hired the work done and bought all new replacement parts for less than a new one, but I searched for good used, robbed parts off 2 other junk mowers and only bought a few "new" parts. Your end-of-the-video comments gave me goose bumps. I couldn't agree more about trying to do things yourself. By the way, the background of your new storage/office with the beautiful yellow door, great windows, professional looking staircase, and imaginative color scheme was wonderful. I can't tell you how much I look forward to your videos. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

Looks damn good. Only 2 things I can see you might want to change is: 1 Get a flammables cabinet to put your chemicals in. 2. Change the standard light switch for a motion sensing one for the storage area. If your like me you'll end up having to climb the stairs at the end of the day when your dead tired to turn off the light you left on 6 hours ago.

Great job Wes (and team). You have repurposed that corner of the shop, largely by your own hand and mind. I fully agree with your comments near the end, that too many apparently knowledgeable people will happily call you down for not using the latest, newest materials and megabucks of tooling. It's your property, your project, your labour and it turned out great. Well done Sir !!

Could not agree more Wes. My 22 year old son bought a used pickup with less than perfect brakes. So he just went out and fixed them. I could not be more proud. I have so much to say about it agreeing with you. We are in an absolute golden age of DIY since you can learn anything on KZbin. It's sad that more people aren't doing it. Good for you and your wife. Looks awesome and it will serve you so well. I like the carpet idea but it may not be the best idea with moisture and grease and other icky stuff but it would sure cure the echo.

You sir, are truly a "gifted" person. Not gifted in the sense that everything comes easy to you, although it does. Gifted in the sense of whatever you choose to do, you can understand the process, dedicate the knowledge and tenacity to make it a success. Basically, whatever you touch turns into a success. Not that you won't stumble some in the process, but in the end, it WILL be a success. The Office is great. The colors are perfect, the layout is perfect, the electrical is perfect. You know why? Because YOU did it (with some most excellent assistance I might add)!! Like my wife's grandmother told us one time after we struggled for over a year building our first home, "hey, are you warm and dry?? If so, then you succeeded." I've worked very hard to teach my daughters to be self-sufficient. And it has already paid back dividends. Even if they choose not to perform the work themselves, they have a good basic knowledge of what is involved in a project to be sure it is done correctly and fairly. So sad to see a lot of our younger generation sit in front of their tablets and paying someone to do everything for them instead of experiencing the thrill of completing a project themselves.

My customers used to ask my opinion about the colors that they had chosen for their project, and I would always respond with, "It doesn't matter what I think when the job is done, I'm out the door...what matters is what you think about the color you've chosen, do you like it?" If you choose carpet for the floor, choose a color that will look like motor oil and I would put down carpet tiles so that you can replace the high traffic areas that are going to become dirty after a month of walking on them with oil on your shoes. One of the problems with keeping stock is that if one does not have a good system of keeping the stock so that it is readily accessible one tends to forget what one has. You would be amazed at what a garage sale will bring in regarding dollars in your pocket. Great video Wes thumbs up.

Couldn't agree more with your comments at the end there Wes. I started working on my own cars and my own power equipment growing up because I was broke and I couldn't afford to pay someone else to do it. Channels like yours have taught me a ton through the years and I'm deeply appreciative of the folks like you that put so much of this knowledge out there for free. We all have to start somewhere and discouraging people from even trying gets us nowhere. These days I'm a mechanic at a certain green equipment company but I didn't go to school for it, I picked up some tools and gave it a shot, learning along the way.

Nice job, Wes! Put up some kind of door upstairs. Just to keep fumes, dirt,& debris out of your loft. Even one of those accordion folding doors would work. I've got you beat on the house, buddy. Mine was erected in 1850. Lumber was homemade, fieldstone foundation, slate roof, and the windows are wavey glass that are hard to see through in some places. Knob & tube wiring was installed when electricity was eventually added when the powerlines came up the road. The best is that it's been in my family the whole time. Furthermore, the family goes back way beyond the house to 1750 when one of my most distant grandfathers was born, grew up, and fought in the Revolutionary War 1776. He's buried down the road in the Church Cemetery. My youngest daughter & family live on the back 20 acres. On with the Show! 😊

All of the advice you gave at the end of this episode is spot on and 1000% true! I've learned this same lessons from my dad who passed away 3 years ago (at age 102). He didn't even finish school, was a shepherd in the Swiss Alps and the family was too poor to let him learn a profession. But he did things anyway: He just started to do these things and change them when they either didn't work or to expand on them. I'll never forget how we both once changed a clutch on an old french Citroen - he aligned the disc with a broom stick... it worked quite nicely... Ah and congrats to your masterpiece! It's very well built and the colors are OK'ish ***OK, I'll get my hat and coat*** :-)) Charles from Switzerland

Wes, you did it! You meanaged to arrange the space, build 2 rooms for purpose, reuse materials when possible, setup electrical, paint and have a bit of satisfaction at the end, 6 times WIN! Don't worry about what others say, you chose when and how to do it, so it's your decision and if it fits (or exceeds) your expectations, then you got another WIN. If someone complain about color scheme, let's not waste time over that. We all know it's not possible to be a perfect artist on every branch of knowledge, so some know and shine more on one branch while others on another one. Oy, and let nobody defer or discourage you from your ideas, except dangerous one's. Keep on and make it happen as you like, considering even good advice from others, since we anyway have enough "couch experts" on the move, who have nothing better to do then argue over things they never did and make your life a misery. Cheers, keep on, it's turning out a very nice corner office. =)
