I have one story about the Kingfisher. I was playing someone using a Kingfisher. I don't remember the composition of the Stars exactly, I just remember the last two mechs on the field, my opponent's Kingfisher and my custom Marauder IIC. The bout technically ended in a draw. A few turns in, my star was still in mostly good shape and my opponent was down to a Kingfisher. Unfortunately, we were playing Zellbringen rules, or I probably would have won. However, one by one he tore the rest of my star apart, using the the heavy lasers and Gauss rifle Combo. When my Marauder finally faced the Fisher King, we pummeled each other until I finally got a head shot in with an ER PPC, that also sent me into the red on heat to cause the LRM ammo that was left (I should have dumped it the launcher was gone), to blow taking my mech with him.

The Kingfisher is an often overlooked 'mech but its a BLOODY good one, the Prime and the one with ER PPC's are obnixious because of the CT mounted weapons, and with a standard engine you have to rip the 'Mech to bits to kill the damn thing. Its not the most well armed but its got a nice, logical layout and choice of weapons for the most part and its a bugger to put down. Great vid as always Mr Frog!

People say this thing is under gunned, and at first certainly seems so with no large, punchy weapon. However, this thing seriously can surprise you. The folks over at Death from Above Wargaming reviewed this monster in their Battlytics series, and it was coming in at the top 5 in total damage. The reliability of those pulse lasers and its survivability can’t be understated, this thing absolutely shreds opponents as it just doesn’t die. Highly recommend going check it out!

Only mech I like for heavy lasers is the solitaire due to speed and flanking, but found if you make it 30ton mech in meklab you can retain everything and add a targeting computer

My favorite Kingfisher experience... Friends were running a Hextech Empires campaign. I was playing as Clan Coyote. Was required to use zelbrigen and everything. My Star Captain was piloting a Kingfisher C. One rule for this campaign is Clanners start with double the BV, but must always bid down to your opponent's lance value for every fight. Fight with one friens begins. He brings a very skilled light lance. Only way I could match the BV was with my Kingfisher C. 3 lights and 1 med vs 1 assault.... Game lasted for barely an hour. 5 rounds... Kingfisher had minor structural damage in his leg... opponent had a cored Locust, a legless Wraith whose pilot was now my bondsman, a Spider missing its head and entire right side, and a Jenner in full retreat. It was all downhill from there for me in the campaign. But we were laughing hysterically at how stupid that fight went. Was a great time

Kingfisher is one of my favorites. Such a under rated assault mech. I've used one several times, and it's always just lived to the very end. Most memorable game was when my KF, just ate turn after turn of incoming fire. In the end the pilot died from hits from ammo explosions and stray head pllinks. I think it had 3 internal structure left in its CT and about that again in each leg. It didn't even fall. If just slumped there with the dead mechwarrior still at the stick. Such a narrative moment that'll stick with me forever when I look at the kingfisher

The Kingfisher is another quintessential walking slab of armor. The C config was a go to mech for a player in our local group. I have to appreciate the durable simplicity of the variant as well. While faster and lighter mechs can sport similar weaponry, the Kingfisher chassis bring an ability that those units lack, holding the good real estate. Even a good machine, like a Timberwolf A does not want to stand in place. The prime and the A are lackluster. The A sports the LB 10 which in IS tech is really good, but- since the clan tech version is only a ton lighter- the cannon is inefficient. For the same tonnage you could have an ER PPC and a Streak 6 with 1 ton of ammo or if heat is an issue a large pulse laser instead of the PPC. Don't sleep on the B. while 2 tons of ammo for the Ultra AC 20 is not a lot, this config plays like a hunchback that most of the time can't be killed before it gets that 20 into play. While firing it on double rate is tempting, I've found it better to use the heat load the second shot would take and use that toward secondary weapons- particularly if you need a 7 or less to hit. The one silly decision they made with the variant is putting the AMS ammo in the CT. While "in the old rules" the AMS would chew up ammo in 3 or 4 uses, it's now a 48 point or less ammo explosion that threatens to destroy the mech with 1 lucky hit. A worthwhile consideration is dumping the ammo if there aren't a lot of missile boats on the field. I haven't run the G and I configs, but they look fun.

The Kingfisher is an odd duck being that its a practical Omnimech. The usual Clan mechs are built as first-grade, extremely expensive units with the latest and most expensive equipment, namely Extralight Engines. Theyre not designed for mass-production. That confuses Players who think *Omnimechs* are extremely expensive when its mostly the Extralight Engines. The Kingfisher isnt much more expensive than a relatively common Atlas assault battlemech that has been going strong for hundreds of years. It is more expensive than average because it does have a relatively high powered Standard Fusion Engine for an assault mech, but that just makes it like a Banshee. The Kingfisher's flaws are really just that its kind of underwhelming for an Assault Mech with clan weapons because of how much tonnage its above-average and heavy Standard Engine takes up. It is very similar to the classic and flawed Banshee with a big engine and lackluster firepower. In the Kingfisher's case is at least carries higher grade Clan weapons. That still gives it more firepower than a 3025 Awesome or Banshee. If the engine was downgraded to a more conventional 3/5 54kph engine then that would decrease the cost even further at the relatively small expense of being only "Average" in assault mech speed rather than fast. I would take a cheap assault Omnimech with low-weight clan-weapons any day. Its already been a common plans for Players in Battletech videogames to take common Inner Sphere assault mechs and just upgrade them with salvaged or purchased clan weapons.

I always came across the Kingfisher whenever I read through my TROs, not to mention a fair number of my BattleTech books. Out of the canon configs, I like the Prime and T the best. That said, I still made my own, of course. The Kingfisher ISM has pretty much the same base setup as the Prime, but drops 4 of the 'permanently mounted' DHS, leaving it with 13 total. And it is a mixed-tech platform, as its main punch comes from a pair of IS-derived Large Re-Engineered Lasers, one in the right arm and one in the right torso. A Medium Pulse Laser is found in both the left and center torsos, and rounding out the firepower is an ATM-6 in the left arm, along with 4 tons of CASE II protected ammo (also in the left arm). And to take advantage of the slight overheat (26 heat dissipation versus 30 heat generated leaves heat the winner with 4), IS-derived triple-strength myomer is added. Might do a second ISM configuration for this 'Mech that uses a Plasma Rifle.

One of the many Clan 'mechs I've overlooked over the years, mainly because I don't like Clan Omnis of any type. But that's ALSO because they almost always use XL engines and while the clan XL isn't insta-death like the IS XL, its a major issue to lose a side torso. But this one has a standard engine. I had forgotten that. I will definitely be giving this one another look. Maybe I can get the Sea Fox rep to sell me a couple of them with empty pods...

Config B is about the only one who id be concerned about in a 1 on 1 trial. He who is unconcerned about an Ultra AC20 soon will soar through the air on ejection seat. The real measure is comparing this Omni to some second line Assaults. Would a Warhammer IIC be a better choice ? yes, absolutely. If I had no other option of base chassis id pick your config. Its a solid tough design.

I’m not a big fan of clan mechs and especially Omni mechs, I’ve been on the other side of that tech imbalance far too often. With that said, I like the Kingfisher a lot. I like it look and design quite a bit, I like that it’s a bit of an older design. I really like how heavily armor and survivable it is, to many clan mechs are designed to kill as fast as possible without much thought to protection, it’s nice to see one designed for a attritional battle. And it certainly helped that you could easily see this is mercenary or inner sphere units as salvage or purchased since it’s an older second line Omni mech.

I like the G config. Really makes the most of the SFE, get in close soften thrm up with laser fire then punch through with the lb20 and srm6. I have a soft spot for Clan mechs that do not contain all the newest of the tech available because I do not play as a Clanner often but when I do I don't enjoy fighting outnumbered 3 to 1 (sometimes even 4 to 1 if the Spheroid player knows how to abuse BV with their builds). Also, zombie mechs are always fun to play.

Always loved the Kingfisher! One of those rare clan mechs designed by a cost accountant especially an Omni's that has a standard fusion engine. With moving 4/6 at 90 tons limits take a lot of tonnage, but this is one of my favorites because from a resource perspective you can field 2 Kingfisher's or 1 Timberwolf. The important thing is that with that much engine you need to be smart using the max cheese clan weapons possible, The other factor that limits flexbility beyond tonnage is that with 17 fixed DHS, you really need to be running an energy heavy loadout, which melds well limited tonnage. Just a great mech!

Yeah. About the only real "improvement" would be to reduce the fixed heat sinks to just 14, which would give it max crit-free heat sinks for its engine rating. Dropping to the standard 10 might save more tonnage, but on an assault mech with FF and ES crits used up already, saving those extra eight crits from DHS is worth permanently sinking four tonnes into heat sinks.

That MF variant looks very practical, though I'd be tempted to switch the Pulse out for an ER Large Laser, and make the 'mech more focused on the long range bracket at the cost of a bit of accuracy, the extra tonnage means another heatsink or two. And besides, it could then be called the MF-ER.

Then run 1 heavy laser arm mount and maybe a pair of er mediums in the other arm and another er medium in each side torso, something like that critical slots allowing. Strangely, I loved the Kingfisher of the 3050s TROs. Oddly I usually only field the Prime most times I had ever used it. The MF config is nice mix and I give it a spin. If the kids will give the chance to do so. Hope to some day see a Mastodon video.

For a relatively slow but insanely durable mech, I'm surprised the MF variant doesn't have at least some form of heat dealing weapon. Both for "brand" reasons and for the idea of pushing the aggressor to either hold back to leave headroom or to push someone who's pushing the heat curve hard to knock off every possible point of armor into ammo explosion. I am really liking this mech (if I did Clan mechs, which I usually don't), especially as I find Clan L. Pulse Lasers to be one of my top desires for salvage and really concern me on the receiving end.

I can't remember my build fully but uac10 ra with pair ersmall lct was pair er med ct er large then LA was pair srm6. I had pretty good luck with it until I got another direwolf

I must take issue with describing ECM as "sneaky sneak". ECM and jamming are necessarily noisy; they're the opposite of stealth. Jamming makes it difficult to determine the exact position of a unit, or makes it difficult to get a weapons lock on them. It does not make it difficult to determine there's an enemy. Stealth is "the enemy doesn't know I'm here", while jamming is "the enemy knows I'm around, but not exactly where". And hey, don't go bashing the X! That Artemis V is nasty, and while it won't have the same max damage as the ATM-12, it has sustained accurate fire over a larger engagement envelope than the ATM-12, which only outranges it with the piddly ER ammo. I have had good experience with it, especially if when trying to keep the enemy outside of 9 hexes (generally a good idea against IS mechs), but it's quite punishing if units do get within that range. The conflict with the Fedsuns in places like Inner End was likely a response to First Prince Caleb, who... was not consensual with their Khan. Kinda ruined their good relationship that they'd garnered under Harrison.
