i would never expect a fixed blade head to fly like a field point, the have COMPLETELY different profiles and aerodynamics. you have to buy a broadhead target, no way around that. i shoot the lowest profile mechanical made, the swhacker 1.75" 100gr and i still have to practice with the broadhead. my 100gr swhackers hit about an 2" higher at 30 yards than the 100gr field point. i found out that i can compensate by using 125gr field point and it perfectly matches my hits with the 100gr broadheads. with fixed heads you need to shoot broadheads only, all the time. they really tear up targets and it sucks spending $100 a year on new targets. that is the main reason i switched to swhackers, i wrap electrical tape around the blades to keep them closed on the target. i shot A LOT, all year around and this is the most economical way i have found to keep doing it.

don't blame the broadhead, a field point, or knapped flint head will kill a deer with proper shot placement.

@@yourmomma2995 shot placement is important yes, but mechanicals when i used them tended not to open reliably. I prefer fixed and stone arrow heads. I've found that a properly knapped stone arrow with a heavier wood arrow shaft would get a passthrough much more reliably than light fast carbon arrows, but there is drawbacks to that.

Hi, I watched your video on mechanical broadheads. I have been hunting with a bow for over 40 years and really enjoyed your family based video. I used to only hunt with my dad he passed in 2010 and hunting has not been the same anymore so I really liked your family originated hunting tradition and your years of knowledge and experience. I have been using mechanical broadheads for around 25 years with success. I'm 63 know and cant accurately shoot 70 lbs more I can shoot 60 with a 480 grain arrow at 250 fps which gets me around 65 lbs of kinetic energy with . 50 momentum do you think I can still shoot a mechanical. There is a new company out called Trifecta they make a 1.675 Dia. mechanical which I would like to try do you think I have enough energy stored to shoot this to max 30 yards that's all I Would shoot at whitetail deer anyway. I know things can happen I've seen them all in my years but I still want to do my best to make clean and ethical kills and that I did my best to achieve this. Thank you for you're time and keep the tradition alive safe and happy hunting. Ralph.D

good podcast guys, enjoyed it. I am not a mechanical guy for an elk but i am liking the Afflictor Hybrid for deer. What I would like to see in the mechanical market is for the mfg's to step up the weight and make a mechanical in the 150-200 grain weight with sturdy blades. Not to pick on Rage but the ends of the blades look like they will snap right off. A nice 150 gr, 1.5"-1.75" mechanical might be a heck of a head. IMO, the mfg's need to remove the 100grain weight models as that is more than likely what drives the thin blades.

Andy, thanks for listening in. We are glad you enjoyed it! Thats a very interesting perspective with some great insight. That would be a very interesting head. We would all agree we typically wouldn't recommend shooting a mechanical more than once. Maybe a head like that would alleviate that because it would be more sturdy as you stated.

@@raisedhunting Too many people worring about speed. I think the industry has taken us down this path, 100 grains is the "staple" for some reason- we should all be at 150 gr for adults. Everything would be more durable as well.

Great videos/podcast guys. What mechanicals do you guys recommend for whitetail?

Thanks for listening in! We all have a different one we use. Warren prefers the NAP killzone. David prefers the NAP Spitfire xxx and Easton like the Rage 3 blade chisel tip.

Mechanicals do suck.. let's put it this way.. if you had some mechanical part attached to your tree harness that maybe or maybe not would deploy under certain circumstances would you use it compared to something that doesn't have a mechanism that has to deploy if you fall... Okay then the extra mechanical step is unnecessary.. there is no advantages only disadvantages.. anyone saying anything else is just lying

I lost 2 bucks big bucks due to mechanicals just bounced right back. Looked like it grazed a rib and it did nothing to them. I tracked and tracked and couldn't find them

lots of advantages, lower profile in flight, more forgiving, and much larger holes. anyone that says different is just lying. i have used both fixed and mechanicals a lot over the past 40 + years and i have no doubt that mechanicals put deer down faster. in fact since i started shooting swhackers a few years ago i have never had a deer make it out of my sight, typically they make it about 30 yards and go down.
