Mechelen, small provincial town. KV Mechelen win the cup in their first European campaign. Went on to win the European Super Cup vs PSV (Romario, R. Koeman) and domestic league champions in 1989. Then Anderlecht bought all the players, scared of their hegemony being threatened. My mom said, I was 8, to enjoy it because it will never happen again. How right she was.

I’m a st.mirren fan. And I was at love street. (St.mirren park) the night mechelen came calling. You guys done us over, and we got bad press for it. We were expecting to win after drawing the 1st leg 0-0 But you gave us a lesson that night. Then you guys went on to win it. I was but a child, but I’ll never forget that night. Especially the support from the fans you brought over. A very memorable defeat.

In two words Eli Ohana. One of the best players i ever seen and the biggest legend of my team, He had it all, dribble speed heading finishing, If he was leaving machlen after the cup he could be an amazing player

Not just “quite difficult”, but rather virtually impossible. It’s easier to make money when only the big clubs compete. I miss the times when clubs like Mechelen, Crvena Zvezda, IFK Geteborg could win Euro cups.

@@smakarov24 that's true, if I'm not wrong I think that the case of Crvena Zvezda was the last ever to win what was equivalent to the present day's Champions League, and with a bit more of a variety in terms of countries in the UEFA Europa League 🤔

Hopefully the new conference league will bring some hope for teams that are not from these countries (Spain, England, Germany, Italy). Even though the big countries do each have 1 in the conference league.

No tattooed millionairs on the pitch, just regular footballers. It was beautiful back then. Mechelen won the CWC, Porto and Steaua the Champions, many good teams in the UEFA Cup... it was so beautiful this working class football.

De beelden maken wel duidelijk dat Mechelen die finale verdiend wist te winnen; ironisch ook dat de uiteindelijke goal een typische Ajax-goal was. Een stilistische buitenspeler die met een mooie schaar en lichaamsschijnbeweging de verdediger het bos in stuurt, de strakke voorzet en het binnenkoppen bij de eerste paal. Были времена, когда мы могли видеть взлеты таких команд - как ФК Мехелен. Средний уровень европейского футбола был очень высок. Но... "Дело Босмана" и суперкоманды стали составлять целые Сборные Мира, платя бешенные деньги за футболистов. Теперь, мы не увидим больше всего этого. Спорт и интрига умерли. Остались одни шоу и бизнес....

34 years have passed, and Belgian clubs have no European cups. It's no secret that Bruges and Anderlecht "knew how to work with judges" in 1970-1980. We expect success from Belgian football.

We are coming back on the European scene, slowly but surely. This year, Belgium still has the chance to get 3 teams in european tournaments. Anderlecht & Ghent in 1/4 of Conference League + Union St Gilloise in 1/4 of Europa League. Bruges did a really good job till the 1/8th final of Champion's League. So I guess we can be very happy this year about the results of our clubs, that's really good for the UEFA coefficient for our country which allows us to get the winner of the championship instantly qualified for the CL. We could never expect something like that couple years ago. We haven't experienced historical european paths like this since the heyday of Anderlecht in the 90-2000s.

Je suis supporter du RSCA depuis 40 ans mais j'avoue que 2 matchs hors Anderlecht en Europe m'ont fait plaisir à voir c'était celui-ci et FC Antwerp Vs Sofia (le 4-3 au Bosuil en 1989) . Je suis Belge en coupe d'Europe , excepté pour le Standard car les supporters de ce "club" sont contents lorsqu'Anderlecht perd en UEFA alors que ça fait perdre des points au coéfficient UEFA : triste mentalité .Ce qui explique que je ne les supporte pas en Europe . N'oublions pas que le KV Malines est le seul club avec le RSCA à avoir levé une coupe (des coupes) d'Europe .

Welke arrogantie? De Mos was ook niet goed genoeg voor Ajax. KVM kon veel geld betalen. Niet voor niets ging Bosman daarna van Ajax naar KVM. Ajax had na 86/87 ook de beste spits ter wereld verloren en tijdens het seizoen 87/88 verloor Ajax ook nogeens Cruijff, Rijkaard, Silooy, Spelbos, Boeve en zijn vervanger Hesp (de hele achterhoede!) door blessures en verkopen.
