@katywalker8322Ай бұрын
Finding replacements can be difficult if no longer listed. I have one which has failed where it has a normal seal on the shaft as well (to stop coolant leaking down the shaft), and through not being used for a while this part of the seal stuck to the shaft and was damaged.

What stops the oil or water leaking down the shaft in your example in most industrial pumps I have fitted seals to uses an oring to seal on the shaft on the rotating seal?

Didnt know the water pump seals works like this, cant believe they outlast the life on an engine and aparently incredibly reliable! Thx Matt, the whiteboard is the dick and the balls!

Didn’t realize bikes used a Teflon and graphite sealing face. all the mechanical seals I deal with use graphite and a ceramic one what looks like aluminum oxide
@jamesallen4050Ай бұрын
Super, super slippery PTFE can also be found in [on] your fork leg bushings.
@Paul-FrancisBАй бұрын
yep in chemical industry more used to carbon/ceramic, aluminium oxide or silicon carbide the elastomer eg rubber/Teflon etc being limited to the o-rings or bellows between the outer of the cartridge and the casing/shaft static seals
@ItsAllJustBolloxАй бұрын
We have a lot of double seals with a water feed between them when the pumps are used as scavenger or with vacuum some use a carbon ceramic others tungsten these are very common in industrial applications but none with PTFE as in this example.

I have a question regarding fork seals. Can you use radial shaft seals like the ones used in engines? I have had no problems with SKF HMSA10 seals leaking. They seem to work better than the original ones and I can get them in any size cheap from my local bearing supplier.
@inevespaceАй бұрын
I'm not sure, but I think often fork seals designed to have small lip pressure to reduce sticktion and friction. It is not so important for rotating shaft, so regular seal may be overkill in terms of pressure. Also check number of lips. There are seals with 1,2 and 3 lips. Lips are directional. 1 lip seal probably not suitable for fork. Look for lips similar to OEM seals.

Which part(s) allow leaking water from a failed water side seal from contaminating the oil side?(l've probably described that poorly).
@martin-vv9lfАй бұрын
i've heard that the oils on the skin destroy those seals by touching them.
@Stephane1995Ай бұрын
That would be for metallic mechanical face seals which have lapped surfaces rubbing together
@TheAnigaiАй бұрын
But what about the weep hole on a water pump to show that the seal has failed? You didn't mention that.
@inevespaceАй бұрын
It is other type when you have two seals on oil-atmosphere-water interfaces. So leaking water goes to small chamber, connected with outer world by the weep hole.

Thanks(really really)to my skilled mechanic, it only cost me the price of the seal and the working time for him to get there(pretty a fuckin lot), instead of the clever (🤦🏻) solution from triumph marketing people, which is to change the hole pump assembly….. for a fucking first series unreliable seal mounted at factory ! 😅 feel better to have been able to complain once about that silly story ! 🙏🏻🤣
