Thanks for the overview! You asked for our favorite mech games. I have to mention MechForce for the Amiga. It was an unlicensed (very naughty) adaptation of the BattleTech board game which used the computer to handle automating all of the complicated rules making it really easy to play but still having all the strategy of the original board game. I didn't own an Amiga, but one of my roommates in college had one and a copy of this game and three of us got in the habit of playing this game and loving the heck out of it.

Of the hundreds and hundreds of old games I played over the 90s and early 2000's, the Mechwarrior series is one of the few that I've actually kept every disk, box, and manual. I adored these games when I was a kid and I was so stoked when I saw that the franchise was starting to release stuff again. The modern games have been a mixed bag... but damn those old games were good. I remember firing this thing up on my Voodoo 3 3500 + Intel Celeron 333mhz PC and thinking "What could possibly top this game?!" When I was 16 I visited a friend in Georgia and went to a Dave & Busters for the first time... and I stumbled on the Mechwarrior Pods. To this day, that pod with all it's working physical buttons and sub-screens is still THE most amazing gaming experience I've ever had! Better and more immersive than even VR! I still have my print-outs that they would give you at the end of the match. It would not only give you your score, but would recount the entire battle pointing out all the big moments from the match (almost like Duncan Fisher!) Good times. Breaks my heart that the genre is hanging on by a thread. I wish slow, tactical mech sims would come back in fashion. A Mechwarrior game designed FOR VR (not just playable in VR) would be a dream come true.

Those D&B Mechwarrior pods were the best man! We had them here in San Antonio and I would go there almost every weekend to play, I even still have some of the printouts they would give you at the end of a round that had the battle stats on them! I was really sad when they disappeared from D&B :(

Right in the nostalgia, friend. I’m a multi-year veteran of Grand Council and TKZ leagues on Kali from the late 90s and the only game in the franchise that really hits as hard was MechWarrior 3. MechWarrior 4 onwards, with their hard point system (which isn’t tabletop accurate at all) just don’t bring the same fun factor as MW2 and MW3 did. Especially as flight stick support went out the window after MW4. Don’t get me wrong, MW4, MW5, and MWO are still appealing (although the latter’s model is frustrating as you either have to grind the hell out of events or spend cash to get the good stuff) but they just don’t have the same fun factor as their late 90s/early 2000s brethren with the exception of MW4 Mercenaries, because who doesn’t love Duncan Fisher?

MechWarrior Living Legends is my favorite game in the series and just like in this game playing as a tank or battlemech with 6 machine guns will shred anything so long as you don't overheat the guns in that game "The guns themselves have to cool down like IRL for balance" Machine guns in that also have infinite ammo and reach out to 1600m though the damage falloff after 450m makes the damage pretty much null even if your walking around in battlearmor.

MW2 was my first great love and also my first "real" game after graduating from an old 8086 to my first Pentium. I played it through and through and for a year or two it was actually a sizable part of my childhood fantasy - probably because I lived in a podunk town with nothing to do. In fact, I often imagined driving mechs around said town and stomping stuff I didn't like, which was most stuff :D I eventually discovered the retextured versions for accelerators and expected them to be so much better, even got a Matrox Mystique specifically for that. They ended up being the first of MANY disappointments I'd have in the years with remastered versions. We didn't have Nightdive back then *sigh* Anyway, if I can suggest another video, perhaps Shattered Steel? It's a smaller game but quite fun - the best choice at the time if you wanted faster gameplay. There was also G-Nome which had interesting mech-stealing mechanics, but the 3D environment wasn't well used - everything was very flat. Oh, and of course Heavy Gear - which actually ran on a refined MW2 engine but was not quite as enticing.

A remaster shouldn't be too difficult since the Mechwarrior franchise is owned by Microsoft and Mech2 was made by Activision, which is now owned by Microsoft. If Topps (the current owner of the Battletech universe) signed off, I'm sure someone like Nightdive would immediately jump in to remaster Mechwarrior 2. BUT, I suspect we will lose several Mech designs due to the old Unseen legal issues (FASA took art from several anime shows like Macross which includes the Rifleman, Marauder, and Warhammer). Even though the court cases finally ended in 2017, I would not be surprised if company lawyers warned everyone not to touch or even open that can of worms again.

Peak of the series was Mechwarrior 3, Mechwarrior 4 would be fine on it's own but it in no way a worthy successor to Mechwarrior 3. For one thing the Mechs in 3 had weight and when they blew up it looked like what you would expect from 100 ton machine falling over and crashing to the ground. In 4 they just fell over and exploded like they were hollow cardboard and styrofoam props, no weight to the animation and they controlled that way too. I remember reading at the time that the new development team wanted to make it more "arcade like".

Are You aware of any source ports of this game? I played a bit Mw2 back in the day, but in MW 4 Mercenaries - thousands hours played.

The OP weapons in Titanium Edition really hurt the gameplay for me.

I was a huge MW2 fan and when MW3 came out I was very pleased, however it seemed most people liked MW4 more which I just didn't like because it felt too much like a arcade shooter and not a mech sim. Thankfully MW5 did roll back to more of a MW3 gameplay style, however it has a terrible story and some major engine bugs. Lets hope MW5 Clans (upcoming NEW game) offers a better story and patches up those engine problems.

I thought game wise Microsoft is the one sole owner for the IP of MechWarrior?

The problem is if there's ANY overlap with any other rights owners (mech designs, different eras) the lawyers can pounce

I gotta say something, yes it's true MW2 was very popular, but there's actually another reason for so many editions- MW2's development was a disaster, most of the team left during its production and activision over-promised with tons of different 3D hardware versions of the game that they ended up spending a ton of money printing all the different iterations, and because of this they lost the license to make MW3. However since they still had the MW2 licence they pumped out more editions of the game and two expanion packs, which is why Ghost Bear's Legacy is a half-assed buggy mess of leftovers, and why Mercenaries, which while very good, was also extremely buggy and glitchy and made under extreme dev crunch *you can actually read the dev's hidden complaints about the process in Mercenaries' files, check the cutting room floor page for it!

Cute little video. Sadly it is hardly a review, let alone of all the editions. (Only 2 ports out there ps1 and Saturn) It feels rushed and hasted. Half the editions dont get mentioned and there isn't any in depth info on them. Barely globally. Have you even played any of them?

"But didn't need a check list to start the engines..." But that's the best part! Nothing like a game that tells you "tutorial? Read the manual you filthy casual is just 60 pages long and has a chapter on how pilots eat on the mechs" (Yes steel battalion I'm looking at you)

The sad thing is, if I had the money I would totally drop it on a Steel Battalion rig.

Mw2: Best possible introduction to the Lore/Franchise. Mercenaries: Imbalanced hot mess but the most addictive for replayability. Mw3: Best Simulation, most satisfying Ballistics, Worst A.I. Mw4: Best looking of that Era, best at holding a mirror up to failings of the Inner Sphere
