Made for the U.S. Treasury Department in 1955 to promote their bond program, MEDAL OF HONOR features both Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy and material shot for the biographical film "To Hell and Back". Also appearing in the film are Barbara Rush and John McIntire.
Audie Leon Murphy (20 June 1925 - 28 May 1971) was one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II, receiving every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. At the age of 19, Murphy received the Medal of Honor after single-handedly holding off an entire company of German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition.
Murphy was born into a large sharecropper family in Hunt County, Texas. His father abandoned them, and his mother died when he was a teenager. Murphy left school in fifth grade to pick cotton and find other work to help support his family; his skill with a hunting rifle was a necessity for putting food on the table. Murphy's older sister helped him to falsify documentation about his birth date to meet the minimum-age requirement for enlisting in the military, and after being turned down by the Navy and the Marine Corps he enlisted in the Army. He first saw action in the Allied invasion of Sicily and the Battle of Anzio, and in 1944 was part of the liberation of Rome and invasion of southern France. Murphy fought at Montélimar, and led his men on a successful assault at the L'Omet quarry near Cleurie in northeastern France in October.
After the war Murphy enjoyed a 21-year acting career. He played himself in the 1955 autobiographical To Hell and Back based on his 1949 memoirs of the same name, but most of his films were westerns. He made guest appearances on celebrity television shows and starred in the series Whispering Smith. Murphy was a fairly accomplished songwriter, and bred quarter horses in California and Arizona, becoming a regular participant in horse racing.
Suffering from what would today be termed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), he slept with a loaded handgun under his pillow and looked for solace in addictive sleeping pills. In the last few years of his life he was plagued by money problems, but refused offers to appear in alcohol and cigarette commercials because he did not want to set a bad example. Murphy died in a plane crash in Virginia in 1971 shortly before his 46th birthday, and was interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

I remember reading his book To Hell And Back in 1969 when I was in the base hospital in Fort Ord for pneumonia my 2nd week there. He truly was a hero and a very humble one.

Boy, I sure miss Audie, a fellow Sabine River Texan. Greenville, Texas, near where he was born and raised is the Texas Cotton Museum that now houses the Audie Murphy Museum in a separate section. It is very well done and had quite a number of exhibits, artifacts and personal belongings and accounts of Audie. There is an interactive exhibit and a small theater.

My father was in the final scene of the movie To Hell And Back . He was in the honor guard at Ft. Lewis Washington army base and at the awards ceremony he was standing to the back and left of him carrying the American flag . He was proud of that and so am I .

I recently visited the site of Audie's one man stand where he earned his Medal of Honor. A memorial there is a nice tribute to the man, and a sign in French asks passersby to stop and reflect on what happened there.

I too went to Colmar where he earned his Medal of Honor. I was stationed in Germany 1/ 15 th infantry Alpha co. Same Battalion as Audie Murphy. Sadly , 1/15th infantry was disbanded in 1992. It was an honor to serve in the same battalion as this hero!

AUDIE LEON MURPHY A REAL LIFE AMERICAN HERO AND THE MOST HIGHLY DECORATED SOLDIER OF WW2, HE WAS A LEGEND IN HIS OWN LIFE TIME... THIS MAN WAS ONE HECK OF A GREAT ACTOR, SONG WRITER, AUTHOR, PLUS HE WROTE POETRY TOO... FOR ME AUDIE MURPHY IS THE GREATEST WESTERN ACTOR OF THEM ALL... AUDIE WAS STILL ONLY A LAD REALLY WHEN HE SIGNED UP FOR SERVICE, WHAT HE SAW AND HAVING TO KILL THE ENEMY AND SO MANY OF THEM DURING THOSE YEARS (1942 TO 1945) IN THE WAR NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO EXPERIENCE EVER... AUDIE DID HIS PART WITH GREAT COURAGE, DETERMINATION, STRENGTH OF HIS OWN WILL POWER TO COME HOME IN ONE PIECE FROM THE WAR, HE WAS WOUNDED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, THE HORRORS OF THOSE WAR YEARS STAYED WITH HIM FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE... AUDIE WILL ALWAYS BE SADLY MISSED AND REMEMBERED WITH RESPECT, LOVE AND HONOURED FOR HIS HEROISM... REST IN ETERNAL PEACE AUDIE LEON MURPHY YOU DID YOURSELF PROUD IN LIFE.

Back then, just 70 years ago, Dishonesty was a quick way to seal your fate because it resulted in being openly branded a social reject seconds after you were found out. Faith, Honesty, Charity, Hard Work and Respect for others was expected of everyone and taught at home, in church and at school. America and much of the world is in desperate need of a little bit of "old fashioned" right now.
@Codebreaker51
@Codebreaker51 6 жыл бұрын
Brother, ALL of what you said is either gone or in very short supply today. Faith, Honesty, Hard work, and Respect are almost all gone. Charity?......Well, there is still some of that left, but it's beginning to run short. Yep, I still adhere to those 'old fashioned' values, and am criticized quite liberally often, may I add. But, I make no apology for standing up for them, and practicing what I preach. Our families have lost those values, and have given up, for the most part, in using discipline to help in bringing up their children, teaching them right from wrong. What was once..right, is now.....wrong.and....what was once wrong, is now.....right. My, we have lost those valuable assets to our society today.

+Kharkovkid Just a note … the NY Times (if you do a Google for "Winner of the Medal of Honor") routinely uses that expression…including as the headline on occasion. For example this obit: "James Logan Is Dead at 78 - Winner of the Medal of Honor ". Does not diminish your point in any way.

+PeriscopeFilm My spouse owns an out of print bookstore heavy on Military History. I picked up the Audie Murphy story one day waiting for closing. He was making a Western with actor Hugh O`Brian. O`Brien began needling the war hero saying he could "out draw" Murphy. He then began challenging Murphy and telling anyone in earshot that Murphy was afraid to be shown up. Murphy finally snarled agreement on one condition, that they "do it for real" saying "I`ve killed 350 men! One more won`t make a difference." At the appointed hour, O`Brian stayed in his trailer with the blinds down.

But there have been many just like them. They may not have all been awarded medals, or seen in movies/TV, but they were just like Murphy and Armstrong. Many brave men (and women as well), who built the USA into the greatest nation the planet has ever seen. Unfortunately, there have been more totally unlike them, who have brought the USA down from the inside. And that happened because the rest of us didn't lift a finger to stop them. Shame.
