Through human history there are certain peoples identified as warlike. The Ukrainian's (I could say Cossack's) are one such culture that in my opinion is both cultural and genetic. Present Ukraine occupies what has been called The Russian Steps in recent history, an area as wide N/S as Ukraine from Poland to the Caucasus Mt's and actually extends through China to the Pacific except for the break called the Mohave Desert. The Steps are perfect pastoral lands much desired by invaders and impossible to defend. This was not the birth place of Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Goats, etc but it was a major center of the development of parochialism and horse culture. In recorded history The Rus (people who row not to be confused with Russians) from Scandinavia dominated the Dnieper River. Then The Swedish Empire, Lithuanian Empire, Polish Empire dominated but never really controlled a people who called themselves Cossack's. Next came The Huns and when they imploded the Hungry Empire tried to move in but never got further than Crimea and The Black Sea coast. This was the high point of the Cossack's, The Kievian Rus Empire (everyone wanted to declare themselves Empire back in the day) roughly Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia to Moscow but that came to an end when The Cossack's decided tax collection did not suit them and became mercenaries for the Poles, Lithuanians and Russians. This did not end well. About 1850 dominated Ukraine and progressively treated them as slave labor for grain production...ref 5Mil starved to death by Stalin. This is the period of time Putin points to for Ukraine being traditionally Russian and Ukraine says never again.
