@@shadysorkin9214 I would say Avengers: Endgame was the first time I personally tracked a film that was praised tremendously be critics and audiences(no matter what you think of Marvel, those are the facts), only for people to get "tired" of it by the year's end. It ended up being nominated for one Oscar that it didn't win, thanks partially to legendary Hollywood directors railing against it.

The one who should have probably been nudged out was Fellini. When was "Amarcord" released in the U.S.? I thought it came out two years prior and racked up awards during the '74 awards circuit. Timing should have disqualified that nomination just for this year. But had it been nominated the year before, that would have been perfect.

@Samuel Serridge The point was more political than that. It's all about box office money and what movie will generate the best buzz to put more money in the producers' pockets. Successful movie have won Oscars before, but there's usually a whole campaign about why it could make even more money. Jaws was madly successful, but (according to the Academy) couldn't be sold to everyone as the "award-winning movie" they could make more profit from.

“I got beaten out by Fellini”. The fact that Spielberg, 29 at the time, after only his second theatrical feature, was disappointed he wasn’t recognized over one of the most internationally renowned filmmakers at the time is hilarious. I think his disappointment reflects his accomplishments more than his ego. He worked his ass off on Jaws and made the biggest studio hit of the year. He earned his place in Hollywood.

Understandable reaction. This was his first major hit film and there was a lot of expectation that "Jaws" would get a director nomination. He seemed just as surprised that none of the actors were nominated either. It would go on to win 3 of its 4 categories: Editing, Score and Sound. The one it lost was Best Picture, to "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest," another popular movie. Spielberg was recognized by the Directors Guild of America with a nomination there.

Oh,please. You've probably never even seen any of the other films nominated that year. Newsflash Foreman's perfect film One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was better than your shark movie, which isn't even in Spielberg's top 5 movies.

Spielberg's relationship with the directors branch of the Academy is an odd one. Although he has won for 1993 and 1998 - he has lost in 1977, 1981, 1982, 2005 and 2012. However with the Directors Guild of America he is a three time winner 1985, 1993 and 1998 and has a whopping 8 additional nominations 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1993, 1997, 2005 & 2012.

Consider it this way because he likes to make movies to appeal to the masses, people find it harder to say whether he deserves an award or not because you made a people like, yet that would mean your film doesn't raise questions or cover difficult and perhaps controversial stories. Spielberg is my favorite because he is likes to embrace positivity and that can mean sometimes makes stories with clear bad guys and clear good guys and the academy doesn't like that. They want to embrace movies that are complex. However, I think his stories are complex when you look at how the actors act and characters live in his worlds, in his movies, silence says a lot if not more than words, one person can mean the world a difference, and so on ... But becauae they're interwoven with intense and epic events of the story, that can be lost on people. Either way, award or not, he is one of the great directors of all time and like say Michael Jackson, he crosses barriers with his movies.

@@LPTV84 Great take on Spielberg. I agree, his movies appeal to the masses but often times, they look beyond what's on the surface and dig deeper into the fondness of our daily lives. ET is about divorce, for example.

Hmmm.... I seem to recall an interview in which Spielberg gave credit to John Williams and his brilliant score for "saving my picture". JAWS was well-directed, but so were all of the other five which were nominated, and I can't think of a single one of them in which the director gave someone else credit for saving their film.

And also, it seems, a very level, decent guy...a good man...and his yacht is so big he has to do three point turns on the Hudson river....yeah..he's done very well for himself. I love it when a good man does well and shines....
