I was honored to work with Marc as his supervisor aboard USS Ronald Reagan. When he first considered pursuing a commission, I was the first he reached out to for an endorsement which I was more than happy to give and followed his career as it progressed. RIP Shipmate.

@@usnchief1339I read that he had went missing on his hike and sadly was found dead but never read anymore , did he have a heart attack or something? Such a healthy person and worked in a dangerous job , kind of feels unfair that he’s taken that way. I’m glad his wife was allowed to be there as apparently even for a burial at sea family aren’t allowed on the boat but I suppose maybe because she is also in the navy. When the ship's CO gave the flag to LTJG Rockwell-Pate's widow, he said to her, "On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States Navy and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service." I’ve participated in one burial at sea aboard the USS MIDWAY in 1981. There were two differences. Our 19 year old sailor was lost at sea while we were working together at night and myself and three other guys tried to save him but we couldn’t and watched as he fell overboard and disappeared under the waves. We searched for his body for two days but he never resurfaced. The other difference was we used an actual empty casket, weighed down, that was dropped from the fantail (back of the ship) into the ocean. An experience I will never forget.

Both my spouse and I served in the U.S. Navy as well. This is a beautiful and honorable ceremony, and so meaningful that Lt Rockwell-Pate served aboard this very ship. It's just very profound that the ship he found his sea legs on, is the very ship that is his final disembark of this world. My uncle served 33yrs in the U.S. Navy, retired and found out he had cancer just a couple years after and passed away in just a few months. He was also buried at sea, he was always happiest when he was underway, and struggled when he was on shore duty, always wanting to get back out. I guess they're both were they love to be. RIP Lt Rockwell-Pate

I served four years in the US Navy and I experienced a number things that I consider a major honor to have been a part of. But being part of the rifle detail for burial at sea ceremonies ranks pretty close to the highest honor of all. I participated in at least three or four of them. It is the most solemn, humbling, moving things you can possibly experience. Have a cold one and rest easy, Lieutenant, we have the watch....🙏

I had the Honor and Privilege to participate in at sea burials when I was stationed aboard LHD-3. I was part of three different ones between 2004 & 2005. Was part of the rifle detail. The second one I was able to lay one of my uncles to rest at sea of the coast of the Carolinas during that ceremony and the third one we laid my dad to rest at sea on the way home from our deployment in the middle east of the coast of Italy.

I'm a Civil War reenactor in the Pacific Northwest. You'd be surprised at how many Civil War veterans came out this way. I've been privileged to be part of the color and firing party for four Civil War burials, and in two of which these men were 'unknowns' where research has discovered who they were. It's a special thing to give a man his name back in front of his descendants. And, as you and I both know, as veterans 'There, but for the grace of God, go I'.
