Medical professionals play a crucial role in the lives of Deaf individuals and their families, yet there are significant faults in how they approach Deafness and the support they provide.
Faults of the Medical System:
-Lack of comprehensive information: Often, medical professionals fail to provide comprehensive information to parents of Deaf children about available resources and support within the Deaf community.
-Emphasis on “fixing” rather than embracing: The medical system tends to focus on “fixing” Deafness through interventions like cochlear implants or speech therapy, rather than encouraging parents to embrace and celebrate Deaf culture and sign language.
-Limited exposure to Deaf role models: Many medical professionals may not provide exposure to Deaf role models or Deaf culture, which is essential for fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging in Deaf children.
-Lack of cultural competency: Medical training often does not adequately address Deaf culture or the experiences of Deaf individuals. As a result, many medical professionals may lack cultural competency and fail to recognize the importance of Deaf culture and identity in the lives of Deaf individuals and their families.
-Limited exposure to Deaf community: Medical professionals may have limited exposure to the Deaf community and may not fully understand the resources and support available within it. Without this knowledge, they may inadvertently overlook the benefits of connecting Deaf individuals and their families with Deaf community organizations, schools, and cultural events.

Keep spreading the word! I am hearing, and took ASL in highschool and college! I took Deaf Studies too. The Deaf community is so welcoming and encourage hearing individuals to learn ASL. It’s such a beautiful language.

Then why do deaf people have so much difficulty communicating with hearing people (that is, the overwhelming majority of people)? Why do they struggle to finish school or find work? Why do they read at 4th grade level (on average)? Why do they require accommodations like subtitles or interpreters? This whole "embrace not fix" attitude is the weirdest shit I've heard. This is a DISABILITY, people! It's obvious that it's better to try to cure it rather than "embrace it."
