What on earth is so amazing about this young man? The open shirt collar (the orchestra musicians wear tails!), the restless body movements? The staged hype surrounding an early successful darling of the classical music scene? It can't be the performance of Mendelssohn's 3rd Symphony, others have interpreted it more convincingly.

Why does Tomo, the timpanist of Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, play here? Was he a guest player?

The orchestra seems to go all out for him and the tuttis are precise and rhythmically propulsive. The letdown comes with the 2nd theme. Either maestro let pass the flabby execution of the dotted figure by the woodwinds (notably the principal oboe); or he worked with him without gaining results; or maestro actually WANTS that rendering of the dotted figure. In any case an odd, very exposed anomaly in an otherwise impressive account.

It's obviously intentional, and I like it. It contrasts effectively with the rhythmic precision of the first part of the exposition.

​@@nb-zk7pt After repeated hearings I must agree that it's intentional, but since Mendelssohn could have notated it to conform to what KM asks for but did not, both he and you think you know better than Mendelssohn how his symphony should have been composed. My first reaction (as distinct from interpretation) holds. It's jarring, especially so in a performance otherwise so good. I'm sure you know that Klemperer usually (but not on his recording) omitted entirely Mendelssohn's long coda and recomposed the ending in a very quiet manner.

@@MrKlemps I did not know that Klemperer had recomposed the ending of this symphony. It's understandable to me that someone would, however, because I've always felt that this coda is the weak link in an otherwise splendid work; it sounds like something out of Gilbert and Sullivan, lol. The judgemental attitude towards an interpreter's licence as somehow "knowing better than the composer" is part of the reason for the negative perception of classical music by many, where the score becomes "holy writ" and sacred, creating an overall museum attitude towards what should be a living art form. I've always felt that performance should be an extension and amplification of the creative process. I'm a composer myself, and would welcome and be fascinated by a performer taking my work to the next creative level.

That's a really facile take, classical is an interpretive medium and rhythm is perhaps the most flexible element of all. Makela is free to take such liberties, indeed, most big conductors you can name have done the same. Perhaps there is more to this genre than absolute slavish devotion to every last bit of ink on the page?

1 - the orchestra does not play together 2 - Nobody looks at the conductor 3 - the orchestra is left to itself and therefore does not phrase: the repetitions are not oriented (they are inexorably all of the same intensity); there is no sense of proposal and response which is also so evident, each phrase similar or equal to another is performed symmetrically in the sense of "accentuating the notes equally in the same rhythmic passages that are repeated". Ergo: who conducts? NOBODY.

It seems like the majority of haters Klaus has are haters who hate for no evident reason (so hating for the sake of hating). All haters have one thing in common: Dave Horwitz. You can't point out flaws in Mäkelä yourself you want to get the stamp from that jew dog before spreading your hate. Use your own brains.

@@trevorguy63 Interesting how it's always people who have not worked with him and often not even seen him live that can jump to these strange conclusions, while musicians who work with him are usually awestruck by his dedication, skill, music making and hard work. Very interesting..
