I just can’t with her. Do y’all see how she is running around the stage AND STILL has the support and ability to nail EVERY.SINGLE.NOTE. It’s astonishing! The amount of training that goes into making this look completely effortless is ridiculous. Opera singers can so often get caught up in the technique they forget to act and tell a story. Diana Damrau does not let you forget what is happening in this moment as she blows the audience away with her soaring vocals. Simply the best!

Her singing was good but her acting was not realistic. There were some very aweful moments and now and then a good use of body, gestures, intensity and one or two good favial expressions but over all her acting was poor - she doesn’t look at the other singer when she sings to her, she looks past her at the audience instead and the huge buldging eyes she kept making where you see so much of the whites of her eyes did nothing for characterisation.

It’s crazy how much a director can make a difference. The Royal Opera production is so overwhelmed by its costumes and lighting. But in this concert, with a simple set and less extravagant costumes, the power of the aria really comes through. Same singer, same character, two incredibly different interpretations.

Wow! The anger and lunatic craziness that Diana Damrau can display in the Queen's eyes, is intense and beyond mere mortal fearfulness! She is able to accomplish all the dramatic and theatrical embellishments skills into this scene, and yet... she still performs this aria masterpiece to the ultimate epitome of Earthy human vocal perfection!

The best Queen of the Night I've heard in 62 years and that includes when I sang it! Absolutely perfect enunciation. Her flow sets the bar for other sopranos. I always had to sneak a breath in. Damrau didn't!

Hoch, Deutekom, Sumi Jo, even Dessay all did it better. I'm sure I could come up with a dozen more. Her voice is harsh, ugly, and she has an unpleasantly wide vibrato. It's not good let alone the best 62 years.

Whatever she wears, she is one of the very few and definitely best dramatic sopranos ever. There are many great singers singing this aria, but hardly anybody of them is able to sing it that dramatic. Most of them sing like nice little girls with amazing technique but not at all matching with the real character of the queen of the night. Bravissima Diana Damrau!!!
