This short action armoured Knight fight movie was written and produced by Norwich HEMA Society in an attempt to create a fight scene using authentic historical harnischfechten poleaxe and longsword fighting techniques, including half swording, pommel strikes and grappling.
It was filmed by free sparring, with a few planned moves to give a loose choreographed sequence.
It was inspired by the “Knight of Hope” by Andorea, and "Fiore" by AM productions, and the videos by Dequitem, which have had a big influence on us, and set the bar for how armoured fighting and choreography could and should be depicted.
We wanted to depict the fighting style of the medieval Knight, showing the correct technique for Harnischfechten fighting in medieval armour ( suit of armour or harness) whilst showing the combatants as being cautious of each other, as the fight is to the end. As the Duel ends, the two parties become visibly tired and start to feel the weight of their armour, and their breathing becomes laboured. Their actions become more clumsy and not as precise, ending in a grapple and brutal finish.
If you enjoyed this short film, please remember to like, share and subscribe, as it really helps our channel grow. Feel free to leave feedback in the comment section below. We intend to launch more armoured Knight videos soon.

I get the feeling that a lot more of such engagements ended because one man became exhausted, or suffered from too many hard bangs on the armor or helmet (bruises, possibly concussions), than decisive sword strokes or swings of the axe. Hopefully you were fighting with friends nearby who could drag you back if you fell down, before the other guy could brain you or stick a dagger in your eye or neck.

From my personal experience in 1300 armored duels, that is very much true. When you try to hack with a sword at someone in full mail armor and greathelm, there is little actual damage you can do. Bruises will be the worst. A very heavy blow could potentialy make a joint break if it's unprotected by plate, but that's not an easy hit to land. Still, my armor weighs 25kg. That is something I can fight in for a decent amount of time. But yes, the exhaustion (and lack of air in closed face helmed, and overheating in any helmet really) does inevitably come and then you need a breather. If you don't get it, bad things happen. Armor moves the center of mass up, so, you usually you get toppled to the ground by someone pushing you when you are either careless or simply too exhausted to resist. In this video, they both got tired still rather quickly. So, the effect of exhaustion is shown very well here, perhaps a bit overblown. Though their armor is likely a bit heavier than mine, so, there's that as well. Not sure about how optimal their movements were in terms of conserving energy, poleaxe is not my thing, I did get feeling they use a bit too much of arms to generate power and not putting their core enough into it at certain clutch moments (each such mistake, even a minor one, costs a LOT of energy in armor), but I may be wrong.

I see no problem for hollywood to utilise these kind of fights in future. They should adapt them already

I still have a lot of trouble envisioning how a high-late medieval fight between two lines of plate armored men went down. If they stood in formations, they could simply keep fighting forever until one side collapsed from the heat or from exhaustion. Maybe 1 or 2 percent of them might end up being unlucky enough to be jabbed in the armpit knocked hard enough on the head to fall unconscious, but somehow the image I get is like two tanks fighting against one other except their main guns were replaced with bolt action rifles.

Kinda? It’s a lot easier if you can hit someone who isn’t looking at you, though!

Well, at least the armour works as it should, but these guys sure don't know how to kill someone wearing it! Very reasonable, because they didn't grow up learning the skills or developing the tactics since the age of seven, but more importantly there is no adrenaline channeling thier tactics with the kind of power needed to do it. But Western martial arts are indeed in a new renaisance and catching up with Asian martial arts, nice to see a new beginning.

@jamesmunoz9090 thank you for taking the time to message. What techniques do you think we are missing?

@@norwich_hema_society Not missing anything but trying to recreate techniques is difficult. I practice Aikido/kenjutso/Iaido and I realize that these have devolved into something not like they were in the Sengoku Jidai era equivalent to the15th century in Europe. Naginata and Yari technique deal with similar issues, grappling is very essential too (jiu jitsu) against an opponent in armour.

Where did you guys buy your armor? Did you get it custom forged by a smith or did you buy it online from a vendor?

They're bought piece by piece, mainly second hand from re enactors, but some from vendors. It's a constant evolution trying to get kit that looks homogenous, and trying to upgrade!

@hankj.wimbleton_gamer-madn2412 it's an armet worn without wrapper to increase mobility. The rondel is integral to the armet.
