Described as Edward, the Black Prince’s most successful battle militarily, the Battle of Najera (also know as the Battle of Navarrete) during the Hundred Years War turned out to be disastrous politically and financially for him. In this video, Kevin Hicks explains the players in this complicated campaign, and uses his modelling skills once again to describe how the Battle of Najera played and why it was so disastrous.

Kevin would make a great addition to the current Time Team. Even Kevin's channel name fits, as a contributing member. Squads are part of what? You could say, A TEAM. I'm going to keep encouraging Kev to shop himself out to Time Team. They are still forming a new Time Team via KZbin, and have now even managed to secure Tony, for upcoming digs/docs! Now we need good ol' Phil, Raksha, and a new important figure, called Kevin Hicks!

While the French king was living as a POW of the English king, he requested that some of his own royal musicians be sent over from France to entertain him (as well as serenade the English king, no doubt). He even requested specific instruments and books of music to be brought over, including an early form of harpsichord, a keyboard instrument known at that time as the "checkar". If you want to hear what this music most likely sounded like, look up any good performance (right here on YT) of the music from the Robertsbridge Codex. This collection of music that was compiled in about 1360, is thought to be some of the actual music that King John II had brought over with his household musicians. It's pretty amazing that we can listen to this Late Medieval music today because it was written down in a form that allowed it to survive to our modern day! I really think this is about as near as we can currently get to "time travel", and I think that it should be a bigger deal in the history community in general!

For those unaware of Prince Edward’s strategic skills, this was a good example Kevin. Outflanking du Guesclin (and using a pincer move) beautifully described but your best points were Najera was a failure, ultimately. I don’t think I’ve come across this explained so clearly before, anywhere. Can’t wait for more du Guesclin, I was not aware that it was Prince Edward who made that decision to permit him to live (ie ransom) rather than execution.

I think you explained it well as complicated as it is. Even during peace time there was little peace with the various bands of mercenaries running around so it's not an easy period to get your head around. Thank you for the explanation.

Thanks very much. My son Josh (who you'll see in some of the armour videos) had a similar problem. He was bright, but the teacher was boring and the curriculum was boring too, so although he knew an incredible amount, it wasn't the same stuff he needed for his exams. Taking a subject and taking an interesting angle is paramount 👍🏻.

I was the same with physics at school in the 70s. They weren't even going to enter me for an O level. Yet 10 years later after a bad accident at 16 I did a 6 month course with an instructor who taught with humour and made it interesting. I got distinctions and credits in my City and Guilds as an electrician. Yes, interest is paramount.

Amazing. You have really taught me something. As a fairly uninformed yank, I have always considered the 100 years war a strictly English vs French affair. In my mind that is. When I’ve thought about it, it’s been heavily armored slugfests occurring at Crecy, Poiters, and Agincourt. I never considered or knew about battles such as this one. Fascinating, thank you! His love for history is apparent. I am a history teacher. I had 1 teacher that gave me freedom and kept history alive. Kevin puts the professionals to shame

I had some British medieval history taught to us in a US high school, in history class. It mostly hit notable points like the Norman invasion, the Hundred Years War, Magna Carta, etc. Didn't delve deep into any of it, but that was the case for nearly all the history curriculum. Of course, this was back in the late '80s and early '90s before the public school system and it's curriculum was increasingly gutted, taking the nose-dive into what it is now.

Excellent video once again, Kevin, as was the one you did on the medieval horses before which I (to my shame!) forgot to comment on (it too was very informative and I very much enjoyed your explanations of the horse types) With regard to this one, however, It's interesting to see how these conflicts developed from smaller states and their status as belonging to this or that nobleman or King. The latest book in David Gilman's excellent 'Master of War' series (which I'm reading at the moment) shows this, as if (as happened) Pedro had to leave Castile and Henry took over, this left Edward of Woodstock's holding of Aquitane with an enemy at its back as well as its front, and also shows the cruelty the 'routiers' (mercenaries) meted out . A brutal, dark but ultimately fascinating period, which you present in a clear, easy to understand way. Well done to you, Sir!

Great work, and love watching and listening to you. The passion and love you have for this is amazing and makes for great teaching. Amazing what someone will watch and learn about if the teacher is as passionate as you and has so much love for what he teaches. Good on you, sir. Top work as always.

Hi Kevin: moving those miniatures around and the way you are dressed reminds me of the “Friendly Giant”; a TV show many of us older kids in Canada grew up with. Thanks for this.
