Yeah there's definitely a survival element to it, the game customisation options are really good as well so you can make it as hard or easy as you like. I wouldn't say it's the main focus of the game though.

It's a bit hard to explain but you just need to be standing at the right height next to the beam when you drop the bucket. If you watch the stream i go on to do it a few times with different items. Starts about 1:40:00 kzbin.infoeWi_VeXV-yE?feature=share
