“Pilgrimages = spring break” is absolutely fascinating and makes total sense!

I was less impressed. A good historian immerses herself in the culture of the time being studied sympathetically, and tries to explain the past in its own terms, but Janega is definitely a woman immersed in the conventional wisdom of OUR time, and views the culture of the Middle Ages mockingly and through an alien lens. She seems to have absorbed some data, but no understanding, and her talk is trivial gossip.
@silasrobertshaw81222 жыл бұрын
@@grizzlygrizzle she is almost always mocking us modern people, not the Medieval people. The way she talks is generally more accessible for the non-historian, which can be off-putting for those expecting a more "academic" presentation. She 100% knows her shit, and I personally love her presentation style.

@@grizzlygrizzle You realize the irony of what you said right? NONE of us can truly be immersed in a time that we *literally* cannot exist within, as we live NOW. lol Such a funny double-standard there. You do your best at the end of the day, of course but ultimately we are all alien to customs/culture that existed several centuries ago that are nonexistent today. She has a PH.D as a Middle Ages Historian and we all have to admit that things as far as "science" back then goes - they were simply inferior to that of modern knowledge. It isn't rude, it's just fact.

@@silasrobertshaw8122 -- Mocking the Medievals or mocking people today, it's still mocking. So-called "criticism" is the approach of much of today's conventional academic wisdom. There are plenty of alternatives besides nostalgic hagiography.

Doesn't mean that everybody would follow it, this is what the ideal should be like but like she gave the example no one would have been born in September but that's not the case. Don't forget that there were brothels and prostitutes (obviously not ideal but happening anyway )

Tbh, I do think that some things that might be considered kinky now would've been relatively commonplace back then, like, I'd imagine that men were generally expected to be in charge in the bedroom (I'm sure reality didn't always adhere to that but it probably often did) and women were expected to be submissive. So there you have some (possibly often involuntary) dom/sub dynamics right there. But a lot of kinks that exist today are probably also very specific to modern society and wouldn't have really existed back then (for example, I'd imagine that piss play wouldn't have been much of a thing because people were just less grossed out by urine and had a different relationship with it than we do today).
@Tiger89Lilly2 жыл бұрын
Also urine was kind of important in the leather tanning and cloth dying industries so why waste your piss on your partner when you can piss in your pot and sell it to a dye shop or tanneries (or if you're really poor you might not have a pot to piss in)

Now I’m just thinking about what kinks would/could have existed lol The psychology behind it is fascinating!

I believe the Church has always taught that sex is yes, for procreation, but it’s also for marital bonding and intimacy. The Church isn’t against sex, never had been. She is responsible for upholding God’s laws given to us through Scripture and Sacred Tradition.

Does anyone think that what humans do has changed radically since the beginning? That makes no sense. People have had the same urges and curiosities behind closed doors since the first relationship. Weird concept to me. And the church view in sex is NOT just for procreation. Categorically false.
