With some of these ingredient choices and combinations I get the idea Medieval folks were really just winging it.

Those people you described as "berserkers" are not actually berserkers. Men who went mad with rage during a fight is real it is mentioned in the egil's and various other sagas, however they are not berserkers. The word berserker is best translated to English as champion(although the literal translation is bare shirt however as today the word bare back then was also ambiguous to whether it means bare or bear) they would be part of the lord or kings retinue and would be a champion fighter who would be used to fight duels and so forth some berserkers may have gone berserk but that is not what made them a berserker. I don't like it when this myth of berserkers being these mad men whose sole purpose was to fly into a fit of rage on the battlefield is perpetuated as it is not true and just adds to peoples misunderstanding of history.
@M.S.G.95 Жыл бұрын
Thought this exact thing, the whole "berserker" myth is a mess. A Berserker is essentially just a Lord's Champion, or someone who fought on behalf of a lord.

Well, I'm thankful for modern medicine. I'm glad I can just take an antipsychotic pill for what would be deamed boughts of madness in such an era, rather than deal with ineffective and dung laced concotions. The past sucked.

Berserkers actually originated in Germania around 1st and 2nd century, it was later adopted by the northmen. Original berserkers were half naked with bear skins, northmen had a couple of variations between bear warriors, boar warriors and wolf warriors, but the entire tradition and preparation was very similar to germanic origins.
