I love that you took a chance on this Nettar! I have a Nettar 515 (c1937, 6x4.5 format) that I love!! It's sooo tiny - like you suggest, it's a real pocket camera. I went out of my way to "accessorize" with a 36mm adapter ring for Series 5 filters, and a full set of color filters. The body, lens and bellows are in perfect condition. I picked it up from a guy who didn't know what it was for about $20. I had the shutter CLA'd and adjusted the focus ring. It's just a lot of fun!

Congratulations for your 6 by 6 Nettar, looking and seemingly working like new. The Nettar, made in Stuttgart, West Germany, shortly after the war, when Zeiss had been expropriated at their place of origin in Jena, were the more economical Zeiss camera line. The upgrade Zeiss models were the Ikonta like, in 6x6, the 521/16 and later models. They featured double exposure safety and came also with four lens Zeiss Tessar f3.5 or others like my, rather rare, Agfa Soligor, and a Prontor shutter with more exposure times.

I have two Nettars that are the F6.3 version. They are some of my favorite cameras. They are a wonderful option for an inexpensive and top quality medium format 6x6 camera. I also have a newer F4.5 version but not such a fan of that one since it has a maddening double exposure interlock which can cost you a roll of film if you have it loaded wrong because the film advance and the shutter cocking mechanism can get out of sync,

I love it. And the 6x6 size negs. It's tricky to get on with at first but you soon get used to it and learn with trial and error. The focusing is a pickle without a range finder. Anything 10 or so meters away just hit at infinity and get a sharp focus. Anything below that I use guess work. Usually 9/10 hit it right.
@edwardelcock28195 жыл бұрын
Great video about the Nettar, I've got one too, my version has the shutter lock to prevent double exposure. I've always been impressed with the image quality. It is up there with my Rolleiflex 3.5 With a Tessar lens and my Rolleiflex 3.5c which has a planar lens. The extra bonus is that its very compact and light to carry about but slower to wind on. My other favourite MFfolder is the British tank-like Ross Ensign 820 which can take 6x9 or 6x6 images. I'd love to see you do a video review of one of these if you can get your hands on one.[there is a rangefinder version which is eye wateringly expensive] .Mine was £60 on Ebay. Keep up the good work!

To make focusing easier, the lens has 3 helpful marks. On the aperture ring there is a red dot next to f/11 mark. There are two dots on the focus distance scale, one red and one black. When the aperture is set to the red dot and the focus is set to the red dot, it’s the hyperfocal spot. Everything is in focus from about 5 meters to infinity. If you use the black dot on the focus scale, everything is in focus from about 2.5-5 meters. So with those marks you’ve got focus from 2.5 meters to infinity. It’s about f/10 for the aperture at the hyperfocal spot, so I find for landscape photography, it’s best to use a medium speed film of about iso 100. Using 400 speed film or faster at f/10 on a sunny day means shutter speeds of 1/250 or faster, and the shutter maxes out at 1/200.

Shoot Film Like a Boss - I didn't know that 6x9 needed an enlarger and I hope you get one. I've only been here five minutes and I'm learning already! More years ago than I care to admit, my Dad made an enlarger using a vintage car head lamp mounted on a stand. I wish I could remember how he did it... It worked a treat! As a child, it was my job to "twiddle" the button back and forth on the developer tank until the film was cooked. I swished the prints too! It was magic watching the pictures appear - those were the days!
@Frisenette5 жыл бұрын
Always wind just before you take the photo. The memorule is that the film will be more taut that way, rather than if it is left bumping around in the camera. So not only will it help not getting double exposures, it will also help sharpness.

It always amazes me just how good the lenses are on bellows cameras of this period and how cheap they are. I think most people are put off by the steampunk dials and levers on the lens. Nice shots as well. Not having 'Steadyshot' on vintage cameras just shows how wobbly we've become (in our old age) and why all photographers traipsed around with a tripod before the 1950s.

Sadly the slower shutter speeds stick and I have to use 1/100 or 1/300 sec only, bu5 it’s not been an issue so far. Given I like it so much, I think I might pay to get it CLA’d (which will probably cost me more than the camera did :) ). Looking forward to seeing what else you get out of your Nettar.

Shoot Film Like a Boss Good idea. I’d not thought to do that, but you could be right. It’s presumably just a clockwork mechanism controlling it, so I guess there’s full analogue control, with the markers on the dial being indicators rather than the only settings available.

Those Zeiss Ikons are nice camera's, I've got a small collection of them in 4,5x6, 6x6 and 6x9.(30's - 50's). Try to find a separate rangefinder for in the flash shoe, they are quite handy with these camera's.

Nice! I'd like to get a 6x9. Huge negs! I did strap my Braun Paxette on the hot shoe. Not sure if it would be accurate enough but it was too heavy anyway! Thanks. I may get a ranger for it. Do you recommend any?

I use a Voightländer from the 50's, like this one: johns-old-cameras.blogspot.nl/2011/02/voigtlander-rangefinder.html

_I have an agfa isolette of my gran father. Really nice camera, still in nice condition, but the focus distance is in feet and in italy we are not so in "feet unit of measuremeent". Great job. We wait for the tea stain video ;)

Just bought one and loaded up with Exp. 2002 FP4 to shoot tomorrow. Think mine is a bit later version model as it has the blanked off shutter release screw thread on lens and release thread in shutter button, has mechanical multi exposure prevention (with a small apperture in the top plate that shows red warning indicator) (no red warning on right side of viewfinder window), has model family 518/16 embosed in rear vinyl but no serial numbers (lens or body). It is fitted with the Novar 75mm f4.5 and the Velio shutter providing 1/200th, 100th, 50th, 25th, 10th & B settings. All speeds seem accurate.. lens is crystal clear and no signs of wear or even use (just some flakes of black enamel paint come away, easily rectified). Bellows are like new and lens panel is proper square to the body. Focus is smooth and good resistance. Not even any dust in viewfinder. I've been very lucky to aquire for £27 on ebay and look forward to seeing the results. Will process in HC110 (dilution B) for 11mins. I mixed up 500ml in April and have used the very same solution for multiple 35mm camera test films (10 frame runs) over the subsequent 6 months and still delivering good negs. The original concentrate spent 20years in my garage before first opening in April. So does it last.. you bet. The 35mm FP4+ used was also Exp. 2002.. kept in bulk loader at room temp.. no issues. If you know my exact Nettar model I'd appreciate the info. 6x6 rocks! 😃

I have one of these great cameras. My current project with it is "LESS" or long exposure square shots. I have a 6 stop ND filter attached. Using Fuji Arcos 100 the shots are great.

Just bought one of these cameras, but the shutter was stuck, so stripped cleaned and managed to get it free. Problem is setting up infinity focus again... with wide tape across the back and a 10X magnifier,,,, Have you ever done this before? Also, looking through the viewfinder seems strage as you can look all over the place... how do you view things correctly? I already have a Zenit-E and a Zorki 6 with built in rangefinder.... Thanks Colin
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss6 жыл бұрын
Colin Mair not sure what you mean about tape and 20x magnifier. I use the viewfinder as a rough guide really and to straighten my horizons. It's a tricky camera to use but I love the challenge of it.
@colinmair25766 жыл бұрын
To set infinty focus after taking the front lens off, I have read you put tape across the rollers in the camera with the back open then set to bulb mode with aperture fully open then view the image on the tape and adjust the lens until you get the correct focus, then tighten back up the front distance scale. I've just won on eBay its big brother, a 517/2 f4.5 which is a 6x9 it looks to be in mint condition similar to yours complete with leather case lens hood and green filler with matching leather pouch for the hood and filler all for £31 +p&p 😁. So I'm now officially hooked with old medium format folders that will be 4 in total, 1 kodak 66 model ii and 2 kodak 66 model iii's one is mint the other good which I'll hold onto for parts plus lens hoods and a filter set and a watameter range finder.

I used to have a few voigtlander folders. Including tyhe awesome Bessa 11 6x9 I ended up always winding on just before the shot. that way you can also be more sure that the film is pulled tight and flat. If you wind on post shot, it could be a long time before you take the next and the mechanism might have a little "give" in it and your film not be as flat as ideal. Is this is Nettar 517/2 ?

516/18 I think it is

Hi Roger.just received my zeiss ikon nettar today and it looks in fantastic condition considering how old the camera is.just wondering though are there any light seals in the back of the camera ? as I could not see any myself when looking at the back when I opened it up to load a roll of 120 film.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss6 жыл бұрын
Nice one! There is a strip just under the view finder all along that gap. And also to the right where the door hinge is you should see some fabric. That's all mine has. No leaks
@danburrill87166 жыл бұрын
I found a good condition Kodak 66 Mk II (one of the few Kodaks to take 120 rather than 620 film) for £13.50. All it needed was one light seal replacing. Virtually the same as the Zeiss Ikon nettar (my lens only opens to f6.3). I've got a roll of Ilford Delta 100 in it at the moment, hoping for a nice sunny day to take it out.
@daviehudson42706 жыл бұрын
is 6x6 the base unit for 120 films? you wound it on to the number but what if the nettar was a 6x9 ?
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss6 жыл бұрын
The red window would be in a different position for 6x9 and 6x7.

Hi Roger...Can the shutter speed be set in between the markings e.g 125 somewhere between 75 and 200? I ask because I would like to use the sunny 16 rule with 125 asa film

Hello there! Whery nice review and introducing into this camera. My question is: I shot a couple rolls on this camera and even on f11 it have very smal DOF. I try to focus on distance scale to get some infinity for that aperture but no sucess. Is it for medium format I just need to go maybe f16 or even f22 to get very deep DOF for landscapes? Thanks!

I didn't know how to use it until I saw your video :)...Got many cameras from flea market each approx. £2! Kodaks, Canons all analogue I don't use digital. all work great:=). Question is(my partner's dark room not having, just old chemicals from late 90's, can't use??).. I can send the negatives to laboratory that develops 35 mm? they will develop 120 mm also?? I subscribed to your channel, great video this one :)
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss2 жыл бұрын
I would bet the chemicals are unusable.

Does the lining up of the arrows with the viewfinder really matter that much? Once you close the back, you anyway will wind the film further until the “1” appears on the red-tinted window?
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss3 жыл бұрын
I think it does on my mamiya RZ. Not sure about the ikon but it's just habit /practice
