Thank you for doing this video. I didn't know it was possible to use Mamiya lenses on the Nikon Z cameras. I have the 110mm Sekor lens along with several other Mamiya lenses. Adaptor will arrive Thursday and looking forward to trying it on my Z6.

Nice video, but I think it might be even more interesting if you had pictures throughout the video illustrating your points, as opposed to right at the end only. I hear you about getting vintage glass and adapting it to the Z6. I just picked up a very nice Nikkor 105mm f2.5 that's about 40 years old, to go with the same aged nifty fifty my Opa gave me years ago. Both have the scalloped focus ring, and I love the soft bokeh both give. The focus peaking ability of the Z6 makes this oh such a fun process now, too! Yes, it takes more time, but I get so many images sharp because of the focus peaking that it's a joy to shoot with! Glad to see that it's possible to shoot with such a fine, medium format lens, too! Your images were very nice! I can see why you really like shooting with it!

There is a little bit of truth to this. One of the problems with youtube is that if I made a video on “visualizing the shot” it won’t get NEAR the reach as a post does mentioning any type of gear even though the content is way more helpful. So what I’ve been doing is to mix really helpful content with some gear related stuff so people will actually learn something when watching my videos instead of ONLY lusting over gear. Gotta be creative haha!

So glad to be watching your videos again! My photography has been on the back burner (and still is for now) as I’m dealing with a pretty bad back injury (bedridden most of the time) and we’re renovating our RV to move into full time with our 6 kids. I did start two podcasts, write a song, and read a TON of books though 😂

@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Will, Santa Fe is mostly a safe to be right now. I'm able to get out and around town with my camera and there is very little foot traffic which means I can to keep to myself. One thing that I do notice is that there is very little change in what I keep seeing over the last few months. Places are pretty much closed up and left as they were when the shops and stores were first shuttered. The good news is that the light here is always changing and offers up unique images which helps to keep me engaged. Be safe and thanks again for your videos and visual inspiration.

I’ve been out walking around in nature with my d850 and old Nikkor non ai lenses. Taking closeup pictures of plants, mostly the spring flowers . The old lenses of Nikon back then we’re transitioning from the Sonnar lens design into the Gauss design with the SLR style . So the back focus was different so lens designs were being modified. A lot of learning was happening just like now with the new mirrorless cameras and lens designs. Also like with Nikon Z bodies and the new large mount and short flange distance. So I’m taking advantage of the old lenses not being as sharp at shorter distances when shot wide open on not as closed down . Then adding closeup rings to get a macro-ish distance. But it give these flowers a beautiful painterly blurr and killer bokeh. Loving it

Does this lens act like 110mm on the full frame camera or is there a conversion needed in terms of FOV?
@milesian1
@milesian1 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s equivalent to 110mm because the sensor is full frame, which is the standard for calculating focal length and FoV.

I have a couple of Hassy lenses with the Nikon adapted (plus FTZ) but haven’t tried it... ??? Must be great glass (from my medium format chrome days) but can it be - that - much greater than my legacy Nikkor glass??? Honestly, never saw that much difference (zither than size) in the final result.

Maybe not a huge difference from other high quality Nikon manual focus glass, but this lens certainly has character to it. Fun as hell to shoot with also!

I totally understand what you're talking about. When I (re)started taking pictures I bought a Pentax because I wanted to use some vintage lenses (and there are a lot of very good vintage pentax or M42 lenses)...when I switched to Nikon I've got me a 50mm AIS 1.2 and it's one of my favourites. I've also got a 135mm f2 Samyang and since some weeks a Olympus 50mm Auto-S 1.4 (with Nikon F mount). Using these lenses really slows you down and makes you think about the image before you take it. I love to do a walk with just one lens and my camera in the city (Berlin) so that I have to deal with what I've got on my mighty but some how old D800. Next step is to get a Z6 so that I'll have back Focus peaking (had it on my last Pentax years ago)..this will push my manual focus photography to the next level... I also LOVE modern lenses...my Sigma 105mm 1.4 would be my always-on-camera...but it's a heavy beast of a lense...but on the other hand...just having this one attached to my camera and a shoulder strap and then being on a 10km walk in the city...very relaxing and also slowing down...if you can't zoom or change lenses you have to improvise and think. I like that! Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them.

The Monochrome Memoirs No problem as have Nikon F mount cameras going back to the 1970’s but won’t change to Z mount as my area is action, sports from athletics to aircraft racing and all sports in between. Found the z6 and z7 very poor for the areas I cover unless a z mount D6 becomes available only then will I switch.

This lens, being medium format, will throw a larger image circle out the back than a lens made for full frame sensors. This means the image on the full frame sensor should be made just from the best part of the image circle and not from it's edges. This should translate to a very sharp image even on the edges as well as in the centre. I'm presuming the adapter doesn't change this but I have no idea. This video is STUNNING. I had no idea you could adapt a medium format film camera lens to a modern Full frame DSLR. After watching this I found an adapter for Pentax 6x7 medium format lenses ( I already have a Pentax 6x7 medium format camera and three medium format lenses) to the Nikon F mount would you believe. Not the Nikon Z mount but the freakin` F mount. Not only that but the company ( A company called GOBE) claim that the adapter allows infinity focus. Ive written to them asking them if they're for real! The problem with Nikon F mount is the long flange distance and so you can't buy an adapter that will allow another lens to focus to infinity because you cant push the lens back far enough to the sensor plain without hitting the mirror. But I wonder if this is not a problem for medium format lenses. I'm wondering if they don't have to be pushed as close to the sensor plane as a 35mm equivalent lens to achieve infinity focus. I noticed how long your adapter for the Mamiya lens is. The Pentax 6x7 to Nikon F mount looks much shorter by comparison and I'm thinking that's because the flange distance on the f mount is already way longer than the Z mount. I'll let you know if I get one and how it performs. This is a brilliant eye opening video man. Keep up the great work!

Is there a crop factor when using a MF lens on a 35mm full frame camera? :)
@gogogeegee76

I guess it was translated to a 110x1.5 ie 165mm (equivalent) lens.
@jpdj2715
@jpdj2715 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. The 110mm focal length does not change, but the part of this lens's angle you use is smaller. We could avoid "crop factor" if people learnt to understand lens angles. That has a complication in that a lens has an image circle and within that circle we should have our frame. A MF lens has a very wide image circle relative to the 35mm FF sensor. Which determines the field of view. That wide circle means you could use the lens very well with a tilt/shift adapter. It also means we suffer less from vignetting. Only using the center of the glass means limited optical glass. The downside is the lens will come across as softer and slightly less detailed. Which can give awesome pictures. The crop factor is an easy number and can best be established by calculating the image diagonal that the lens was designed for, with the diagonal of the frame it will be used for. Example: 24mm X 36mm has a diagonal of ~43.3mm, an APS-C (DX) of 18mm X 24mm has 30mm diagonal (numbers are IIRC and calculated by heart). So an FF lens of 100mm on an APS-C camera has the effect of 43.3/30 * 100 if we want to compare what the APS-C gives in FF terms. Note that you get different numbers when the Mamiya Sekor is used for 6*7 versus 6*6. It is after all about comparison. For the user of the smaller format, the 100 mm is 100mm. Crop factor tells a FF user what the 100mm do compared to the FF world when placed on APS-C.

Not a negative comment but could you have got the shot if you didn't use this lens and camera,?? Yes you slowed down and had to think more about the shot but that applys to all lenses shot in manual, so my question is could you have got the same results without that lump of a lens? Like I said it's not a negative and was still an interesting video and great alternative shooting idea
