I first bought a medium ALICE pack back in 1990 from a surplus store,used it in basic training ( british army ) as we were still using the old 58 pattern webbing along with the totally useless large pack. We were encouraged to buy our own rucksacks and was glad I got one. I used it for years and picked up a frame for it in a PX store in Germany. It went on 3 tours of Bosnia and a tour of kosovo with me and never let me down. 29 years later and I still have it 😊 built to last in my opinion

Recon Marine from the 80's. We would adjust which ruck we used based on length of mission. Typically we used the medium without the frame, but the large was the most common one we used. They jumped well, carried everything we needed with room left to spare (sometimes....). From 91-2010 I was in the Army Light Infantry, and used my gear from the Marines without fail. Well done and Semper Fi.

The irony is the newest pack for the Corps, the FILBE, has been failing recently. Since folks are beating the war-with-Russia drums again, the Corps has been doing a lot more arctic training in Norway and Alaska, and the plastic frames are snapping in the cold. Supposedly they are bringing out a reinforced version. Wonder how many grunts are just going to use the old LG ALICE? Something a lot of people don't know is that the side pockets on the ALICE packs were tunneled like that to carry your cross country skis for arctic warfare use. Another complaint about the packs is they don't carry heavy weight as well as the new packs. But folks forget that these were designed when grunts mostly walked into combat. THey were supposed to be used along with belt gear, which is where all your heavy stuff, like ammo, grenades, e-tool, canteen, etc were carried, not in the pack. If one wants a milsurp hiking pack, then there is no better than the ILBE, as it's literally an Arc'Teryx Bora 80 hiking pack in MARPAT. Of course, the corps ditched it because it was horrific when wearing armor, making it a crappy combat pack.

Ha yup, spot on comment.

Wonder how many Grunts will just buy the commercial Alice frames from Tactailor and others and modify their FILBE to fit it?
@petesheppard17095 жыл бұрын
The newer frames were intended to flex with the wearer's movement, to enhance comfort. Of course, flex means fatigue and plastic generally does not like cold.

When I joined the Corps, all we had was the alice pack, and i loved it. Eventually, it was replaced with the molle pack which i used in Iraq. I’ve recently re-enlisted after a 9-year break(army this time; too old to go back to the marines) and i use a filbe pack with alice frame and it’s holding up pretty well. I don’t care much for the UCP gear they issue us. As a matter of fact, i buy most of my gear i use in the field.

Current 0311 here- A lot of dudes use the Alice frame and straps with the new FILBE packs. Personally I use an Alice frame with Tac Tailor straps. I feel that it sits better with body armor vs the new plastic frames. There really isn't any modding to do to the pack IOT use the Alice frame. I just throw in some zip ties to tighten things up here and there and it works great for me.

Old Eagle Scout here. I have used a lot of backpacks. ALICE packs, civilian internal frame mountaineering packs, external frame backpacks, ultralight backpacks. I first used medium sized ALICE packs in the early eighties. Where I think ALICE packs really shine is when you are going off trail and off road foot travel. Like long distance backpacking off trail using land navigation techniques like compass and large scale topo maps. ALICE packs also really shine when you are humping in extremely rugged terrain where you need to maintain a lower center of gravity to maintain balance...so you can scramble over rocks, logs, etc. Low center of gravity equals safer movement and less chance of ankle sprains, knee injuries. ALICE packs are also just plain bomb proof. If I was going to travel exclusively on trails or roads on the other hand, Id choose a civilian external frame backpack with a big comfortable hio belt where your center of gravity is going to be high.

Great Instructional Video. I'm 68 yrs old and to this day I carry my Large Alice Pack. I have it set up for bug out, bug in, or just as a get home bag. It goes with me anytime and every time I'm in my vehicle. If I need to hump it, it's there for me with all the gear I need to survive for quite sometime. And yes that includes a weapon with plenty of ammo. Again that was a great video.

That's the most comprehensive video I've ever seen on the ALICE rucksack. Really appreciated that you included the versatility of the ALICE frame to hump ammo, water, rations, and fuel. There are some impressive rucksacks issued and/or on the market, but I'm not convinced they are as strong, durable, or as versatile as the ALICE medium and large rucksack with frame. Plus, there are so many ways to upgrade and improve this battle proven system! Personally, I have two "Hellcat M-ALICE" by Tactical Tailor with the improved tube frame...but at its very core, it's still nothing but an ALICE rucksack. Brilliant.

@@Brent0331 When mother nature decides not to help, there's not much you can do about it. Thanks for doing this vid though, it convinced me to pick one up. It looks a lot more breathable than the current pack, especially with the frame. My problem with my current pack is how hot my back gets when hiking, it looks like the frame makes it so it only contacts your back at the padding. Is that the case? If so, that's exactly what I'm looking for. How much of a difference in balance and weight is there between medium and large?
@Brent03315 жыл бұрын
@@CtrlAltRetreat There's definitely a "pocket" in between the pad and the top of the pack on your back. I think this is ideal for accommodating gear like a camelbak. The large ALICE is quiet a bit bigger, however its not really that much "heavier" per say. These packs are made out of a tough nylon material that is very light unlike the modern day cordura packs today. These are combat packs though, if weight is the biggest selling point for you you can get a ridiculously light civilian pack that is guaranteed to not hurt a squire if you drop it on it. Those type of packs wont last the rigors of humping and bushwhacking through heavily wooded though.
@CtrlAltRetreat5 жыл бұрын
@@Brent0331 Thanks for the response Brent. Everything you've said really reinforces that i should give it a try. I've seen some of those ultralight packs and they make me worry about holes in my pocket book as much as in the pack material if it snags on nearby branches. The pack board is a big deal for me. I always find floppy packs feel much heavier than they are. A pack that i can tighten down onto a frame so and can carry a camel bak sounds fantastic. I think it's worth a shot and a pack frame and shelf is something that would make carrying a Jerry can a few miles a bit less unpleasant. Lord knows i wouldn't want to do that again. Better to have and not need though.

I recently put together an ALICE pack and its a totally a different bird. Much tougher and built with combat in mind. More flexible for all sorts of needs. Current 11B. Right now I've been using a medium alice commo ruck with the longer woodland straps for the field and its awesome. Picked up an Alice pack at my local thrift shop for $20 dated 1991 in M81 and it's in fairly decent condition. The straps on mine were custom made with pads from 1945. I ended up removing these and grabbing some NOS straps from the surplus shop, makes a world of difference for me. Since buying this I've been adding what I daily use. Added a first aid kit pouch with insert and recently picked up some 550 cord to make a top handle and some buckles to open the lid of the pack more efficiently. Planning to add male buckles to the top and bottom of the pack so I can carry my IIFS Pack to carry extra equipment and such. Eventually I'm looking to get the frame but for my basic needs, it's not a huge necessity. I appreciate the information you shared about this pack and the ideas you have given me to improve upon my own pack.

I believe Natick Labs was already working on the LC-1 prototypes as early as 1969-70, and they envisioned having a Small, Medium and Large LC-1 pack, but they finally decided to get rid of the Small and went with the Medium and Large. One question I had for a long time, and nobody could ever really give me a solid answer on was "Who got the Mediums and who got the Larges?" A guy I know who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and entered the Army in 1972 told me that the Mediums were intended for "Heavy" Infantry, i.e. Mechanized Infantry, and the Large Alice packs were meant for "Light" Infantry, such as Airborne, Ranger, Special Forces, etc...to date this is the best answer for this question i have gotten, no one else could ever seemingly explain it. Thanks for this great review, i love my ALICE packs man, luckily living near Ft. Bragg, NC there are some really good places to take them to get mods done.

I love the molle sustainment pouches and usually add at least one. Perfect size to pack about 4 mres in. One point I would like to add, I like to use heavy duty zip ties in place of Alice clips. I've had Alice clips come loose on me and if the gear is something you always carry the same way, there's no need for the quick detach clip. You also save a little weight, not a lot but the best way to save 5 pounds is find a couple dozen places to loose a few ounces. Great video! Take Care and be safe, John

We were not allowed to use kidney belts. You could not drop your pack quick enough. I was an RTO and was screwed on that ability anyway. My stuff was all LC - 1 apparently. I go on hunts in my native Georgia that last five days usually by myself. I still carry my ALICE pack (lg)

I appreciate videos like this so much. Not just the gear review, but showing us some old tips and tricks that younger guys might not think of. I'd love to see some videos teaching older soldier skills that some younger troops might not be learning today.

BEST ALICE pack video ever! Run down and tips by a Marine who wore one! Great job Brent! I'm 4 years late to comment but I've been watching some ALICE pack videos and yours ROCKS! I just ordered a 'like new' woodland camo medium ruck with the woodland LC-2 enhanced shoulder straps. I'm looking at ALICE pack frames - market's changed since 2020 but I'll find one in good shape. Definitely getting a shelf for it too.

Hey there brother! I’m a first timer hiker/camper myself and subscriber I just bought myself my first Alice pack and I’m not in the service but I do gladly support all our military servicemen and women past,present and future since my uncle served in the Korean War as a medic. I was watching your video on the Alice pack on proper installation of the straps and my straps was installed incorrect so thank you for the video and for your service! Can’t wait for the next video this is Big Boy Frank from Texas Peace out ✌️

Best pack ever made for long humps, I remember around 2001 when we (usmc) went to that first molle system it was killing us on long crew served weapon humps. Damn good video brother. Semper Fi.

Okay, I've had the Large pack for many years now, bought it off a friend who got himself a "real" rucksack. I only go on 2-3 day trips but still manage to pack insane amounts of seemingly useless gear and something always felt a bit off. Today I found out two things: 1 - I never had an idea that the top flap was openable and 2 - the carrying straps were on the wrong way. I'm a chubby staff sergeant and the straps always were hell bent trying to cut my sides in half. Now I kind of want to find out if switching the straps give a better performance lugging shit across Finnish forests. Also need to stitch the center pouch back together as it gave up some time ago. But thank you Brent for this very informational video, much appreciated.

I used an ALICE frame for hauling my radio gear. It's a multi purpose setup for anything including hunting trips. Thanks Brent for this amazing and valuable upload. This is the system I'm most familiar with. I use that entrenching tool and pouch as well to this day. Sometimes I can't find clips for a good price though. In my opinion, this is probably one of your best videos.

The ALICE system is great for accessorizing. Was introduced to it when I joined my state's National Guard after leaving the Navy. Acquired my own medium and large packs with frames for hiking and camping. Even got a couple new ideas from your video. Thanks and Bravo Zulu.

I have a large LC1 that has the LC2 type buckles. I wonder if that's a late LC1. Pretty sure it wasn't modified. We lost a guy downrange and it was his from Bragg CIF. I tried to turn it in, but they wouldn't take it when I was turning in mine. They write off a soldiers gear when they are killed or if it's medical related, so there is no longer anything on the books to be turned in. At the time, I didn't want the gear since I didn't need any extra stuff to store. But I'm glad I kept it. When my unit got the new molle packs (I was in 2000-2004), I just left it in the box. I already had my alice pack set up like I wanted it, and they are virtually indestructible, as you say. I still use it for rucking and I've used it on several camping/hiking trips. No, they are all Gucci like the stuff from REI, and it's probably not what you want to do a through-hike, but I've had tons of stuff in it and beat the crap out if it, as many others have as well. I was in the airborne and had an opportunity to do some test jumps for a new chute SF was adopting (the SF10) from the forest service (FS14). I had to put about 150+# in it to achieve a total weight of 300# for the combat equipment jumps. They had to validate the performance with heavy loads, or something like that. The good old Alice pack worked like a champ.

issued a medium ALICE during my survival course with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Gotta say, they really are used everywhere and by everyone, even kids in my case! Mine was probably on it's tenth owner but that didn't matter, I was able to jerry rig the frame to the actual pack with a excessive amount of cordage, and also luckily everything's modular so I was able to replace my shoulder strap and my waist strap with ease

Used Alice gear back in the 70s and 80s in the field when I was in the Air Force. Alice gear is nuke proof and tough as hell. Own a medium and large pack now and are great for backpacking.

I used an ALICE frame with cargo shelf ( back in the 1980's) to pack a Bison Seismograph and it's 200+ ft of cables and geophones. for hundreds of miles up mountains & through swamps. The load was 100lbs ++. ( 1 weigh 155). It never broke. Wish I could say the same for my back. I still love the ALICE packs and I have two today & i'm pushing 70 yrs.

Like you said, tried and true and you'd be a lucky man to find yourself a woman this dependable and faithful!! Memory time: I attended Marine Corps OCS through the Platoon Leader's Class Program in the '70s. During my first increment in '75, I was issued WWII-era 782 gear and M14 rifle. The pack was straight out of 'Sands of Iwo Jima' with the shelter half and blanket formed in a horseshoe around the pack. While small, it rode high up on the shoulders and was a joy to march in, since it was so well balanced. In '77, I was issued then-new ALICE gear, including the medium pack. The plastic Fastex buckles were also brand new, and I seriously wondered how well they would last. One thing we were strongly advised to do was to ensure the turnbuckle that held the kidney pad on was TIGHT, because if it came loose, the metal frame would start grinding into our backs. Because the pack rode low, it could be torment on the shoulders, as the weight would pivot on the hip belt and pull on the shoulders. Being instructed to pack the shelter half and blanket in the bottom didn't help either. We also broke down our web gear and route marched with the belt inside the pack and canteens/E-tool strapped to the outside. How would it be rigged to wear over a combat harness? I have a large ALICE and it is indeed a wonder to use--especially when properly loaded.
@Brent03315 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting Devil Dog! For me the kidney pad sits perfectly above my butt pack and two canteens so its never interfered with my combat load. That's one of the pluses I give to the old Alice frame, although its not as padded as the newer stuff, I dont think anything fits better with an actual combat load on. In this case less (padding) is more.

Used both LC-1 and LC-2. I liked the LC-2 style buckles better. When that spring in the LC-1 got rusty it was hard to use. The straps sometimes started to fray on the ends making it hard to put through the spring buckle. Still have the LC-2 style large after 25+ years. Only that waterproof coating has peeled off. Also, I tied a homemade strap with a section of foam glued on the strap. This strap is tied on the top of the frame. You can get four points of contact to carry the load. Two shoulder straps, one waist belt, and the head strap that goes around your forehead. Not very tactical, but, load distribution is 4-ways instead of three ways. Carried a large ALICE all over Fort Campbell. My stuff and parts to the M-29, 81-mm mortar. Never failed. One thing about the ALICE packs is never dry these rucksacks in a drier. A washing machine is ok, but, let it air dry. The pad on the upper section on the pack shrinks in the hot dryer so you won't be able to insert the frame in the padded part. Learned never use hot dryers the hard way. Had a week of "special duties" for the First Sergeant. Never waxed so many floors in my life. No dryers! Machine wash ok, drip dry only.

We used ALICEs in boot camp and the quick release on mine would never stay connected. You know how DIs are, I had to hump through all of our field training holding on to my shoulder strap so as to keep it on my back, LOL. I was lucky enough to join the USMC in June 1998 and have the LC-2 issued through boot and about a year into the FMF. In mid/late 1999 we received the POS MOLLE system. ALICE was a leftover blessing from the Nam era having equipment that worked albeit not ergonomic but was pretty much indestructible from the fragile MOLLE. THE DoD done the military a HUGE disservice by giving govt contracts to affiliated companies to fix what is not broken. Combat packs are not hiking packs vice versus.

For assault pack mode on the Alice 2.😢 The frame mounting straps will still mate up to the bars on sides of the pack. Works, if you want it. For using with the frame, 550 cord through the same web bar will hold it tight. Or get an Alice mini, which is a solution in search of a problem.

This is a brilliant video. Thank you. I have a number of these packs in medium and large and they are just the best. Thanks for the tip about Zip tying on everything for security and also for the water bottle pack strap installation - very good. I've never been in the armed services but I have travelled much with a medium ALICE and for me it's a real piece of kit. It's reliable and strong. I believe that the ALICE pack is the best ever created. So versatile.

I like mine. I replaced the waist belt with a load carrier belt that makes it ride on my hips better and I keep a couple East German AK-47 MAG POUCHES. The ALICE pack straps are pretty good but I like to throw a couple of stitches in that quick release. I've broken plenty because I put them on my Stürmgepack and my Swiss Army rucksack.

I purchased an unissued medium alice pack for cheap that was in great condition. The only problem was it smelled like vomit because the polyurethane coating as it begins to break down gives off an offsetting odor. I aired it out on my back porch for a couple of week and that did help, but the odor was still there. After reading about the problem on some forums I followed the advice and soaked it in Odoban and ran it through the gentle cycle and air dried it. Now it's significantly better.
