Sinopsis:
This performance is a medley of two distinct traditional Malay dance genres: Malay Ronggeng and Malay Zapin, set to the harmonious tune of 'Asam Paya'. The music, diverging from convention, incorporates four distinct drumming patterns, each symbolizing the unique rhythms of each genre. The dance begins with three cyclical repertoires within Malay Ronggeng: 'Asli', 'Inang', and 'Joget', then transitions into the Malay Zapin. The Zapin section features a new choreography, 'Zapin Kuis', that accentuates the 'kuis' leg movement, a scraping motion of the foot against the floor, particularly noticeable in the first count of each 'langkah'. This unique gesture mirrors elements found in various traditional Zapin forms in the Johor region, where subtle gestures such as 'Gantung', 'Ginjat', and 'Layang' serve as distinguishing features within the repertoire. In its entirety, this medley of Ronggeng and Zapin represents a dance performance that pays homage to the past, where these two distinct genres converged at Bangsawan and urban entertainment centres, while also embracing the future through fresh interpretations of Malay dance choreography.
