Dunsparce is actually based off of the Tsuchinoko a yokai and interestingly almost every decision about its design has basis in myth. The wings allude to its ability to double jump, the nubs on its chin are for its poisonous nature and even its shape as Tsuchinoko are very plump. Even its movelist has a lot of layers to its inspiration. Like with roll out is its ability to bite its tail and rolls up into a ball and roll around. If you want all the details Gaijin Goombah did a video about it.

Dunsparce is based off the Tsuchinoko, a small, flat, serpent from Japanese mythology. Sometimes depicted with wings, sometimes not. The name isn't so much of a pun as it's a cutesy version of tsuchinoko, taking the "noko" and adding "chi". Like how a kid would talk about their pet.

About "what is it supposed to be": As far as I know it's based on the Tsuchinoko. It's this creature from Japanese folklore. They are supposed to be some this kind of small sand snake with a very flat, wide belly. There is no evidence that they actually exist. As far as I can tell, they are a bit like Big Foot or the Loch Ness Monster, there are claims of sightings once in a while, but no scientific evidence that holds up.

So, FYI, Dunsparce is a physical attacker. In Gen 3, you want to use physical attacking moves. While yes, return is good, headbut with a quick claw can mean a flinch whish is better. Defense curl and rollout is one of the best combos for Dunsparce period. If you wanted an easy win against most of the pokemon, you just roll with it, pun intended. Dig or earthquake would be super useful. While yes, thunderbolt and icebeam are good for a better chance of causing freeze/paralyze, you aren't using them enough if you wanted to run them nor are you using a beneficial item to make use of them. I did a Dunsparce only run of Heartgold and beat red mostly using defense curl + rollout. when you are able to get all hits in, it can OHKO most pokemon, and in a game wheresteel types are far and few between, it is your best moves to use, with headbut/return and something to cause a status or coverage if possible. Overall, good run. I would recommend looking over the pokemon one more time before you commit to using certain moves in Gen 3 since gen 4 has the physical/special split.

I'm surprised you never considered using Secret Power during this run. It's a 70 power normal move which also has a *30% chance* (with Serene Grace doubling this number) of inflicting a secondary status effect depending on the environment. Given that the effect indoors is paralysis, it goes a good way in nullifying the disadvantage caused by Dunsparce's low speed too! And it's a buyable TM in the Celadon Mart, so it's not even out of the way to go and get it.

It is REALLY good this early on, and would’ve been even better on Dunsparce because of serene grace. 70 base power, 20 PP. You can get it right after nugget bridge if you encounter the camper blocking it as low as possible, letting you slip past. It’s similar to return, in that almost anything can learn it

Challenge idea I've almost completed. Fair warning it is a bit tedious. The challenge, newest capture only. Any time you encounter a wild Pokémon you have not captured you must capture it and use only that Pokémon in battle until your next encounter. This means only training against wild Pokémon you have already captured and against trainers. It's interesting to see how you can try and manipulate encounters by only training in specific areas to ‘save’ an encounter for a later battle, like against certain gym leaders or significant battles. If you fail to capture a new Pokémon for any reason you must reset. If you encounter an evolution line you have already captured you must not capture it again e.g. already caught a Caterpie then encounter Metapod you can kill the Metapod for xp or flee but cannot capture it. Additional rules: evolutions allowed, HM slaves not allowed, no repels, (this makes it quite difficult, maybe outright impossible depending on the game).

Tsuchinoko real Here's a "fun" Dunsparce set. Body Slam, Attract, Water Pulse or Flatter, a final move of your choice (toxic was possible in every gen until 8, coil is good, etc.), and a King's Rock. You can leave your opponent paralyzed, confused, attracted, and constantly flinching. Once again suggesting Castform in HG/SS

YES! I LOVE DUNSPARCE! Me and a friend were playing pokemon Crystal, and were going to use the Pink Bow Ursurang, but I got tired of looking for one and grabbed a Dunsparce. We later battled each other after the Elite Four, and DUNSPARCE WON AGAISNT THE URSURANG

Afaik, Dunsprance is based on a tsuchinoko. It's basically a japanese myth about an evasive fat snake who can bring luck to the one who catches it... which explains its habilities. No idea why the wings though.

Pre video comment: You can definitely win. Dunsparce are underrated. Serene Grace and Ancient Power is a good combo. Add this to defense curl and rollout as well as the TMs and you have good variety. You're i good hands. I'd know. I used Dunsparce before.

Okay, I'm not providing any proof or anything. But because of MDB I did a Crystal Dunsparce only run and I beat Red at the final level of 73 and I'm super proud. All youtubers I could find with the same challenge were in the early 90's. I beat Red stacking Curse's on Pikachu whilest he was using dumb moves. Then just bearly swept his team.

Hello, Mah-Dry-Bread! I've been watching your challenges (both new and old) and I was wondering a few questions: When you have boring parts of your challenges that require single-button input, like the Wobbuffet Challenge, would an auto-click program be useful? Would you be interested in applying some of your newer knowledge to challenges that you've already tried, such as EV training? (Wobbuffet again comes to mind. Would you ever consider a randomized challenge, where your starter is completely random with the usual ruleset? Anyway, always enjoy your content. Cheers!

Not sure why Bulbapedia was giving that random malarkey about a "bee snake pun", but as other comments have pointed out, Dunsparce is based on a yokai known as Tsuchinoko. It's basically a fat snake that can magically double jump, likes to bite its own tail to roll up into a ball and roll around super fast, and is known for other interesting traits in various tales, all of which are shown in Dunsparce's design choices from artwork to movelist with fine details. Even the weird striping is a Tsuchinoko trait, although normally they're depicted more natural snake colors with darker stripes along the wide part of their back where they're all chubby and plump

I never thought Dunsparce was Ground Type persay, but I always thought growing up that it was a pre-evolved form of Gligar. the slim body, the fact they both had pointy tails, I always thought it was some sort of larvae form before it became the gliding-scorpion thing that Gligar was. Didn't help that I skipped over Gen 2 as a kid, going from Pokemon Red to Pokemon Emerald, so until I was a teen I didn't have a lot of interactions with either family of pokemon really.

Dunsparce definitely has ground type vibes, and the fact you can find it in (dark?) cave (the one outside Faulkner’s gym city in johto) made me think it was a ground type when I was a kid. Unironically one of my favorite Pokémon though so I’m excited for this run!

I never thought Dunsparce was ground type but that was because back in Gen 2 as a child I didn’t know exactly what I was looking at and by the time I did figure it out I already had it and knew well it was pure normal. But it really does look like a ground type and how it both functions and is described you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was or at least was a Normal/Ground. It’s a shame it never became such or got an evolution that made it so.

Grinding on lorelie isn't the best idea because you are gonna lose to bruno afterwards. In a run that you are using return you don't want to faint cause your friendship is gonna get lowered meaning that the output of return is gonna get smaller despite you leveling up. But I have to admit that your videos are very entertaining

If he kept defense curl rollout they would be easy. I think it was a massive throw to not keep them. In a solo run where there’s no penalty for wiping, you reset until you don’t miss rollout. You probably could rollout sweep agatha once you have speed. Speed ev rollout dunsparce probably beats elite 4 below level 70. Defense Curl rollout is easily the best move for solo challenges from my experience.

I actually thought Dunsparce was a water-electric type pokemon for a good year or two, simply because it was blue and yellow and in gen 3, I would usually just find blue colored water pokemons and pikachu so yeah I kinda tricked myself into thinking Dunsparce was a water-electric type pokemon. 😭😭😅

I got an awesome idea for a single run; Pokemon Black/White/Black 2/White 2 with only Zorua. It'd be awesome to see someone do a single run with it, it's one of my favorite dark types. A very good move to give to it too is Aerial Ace, it takes care of both of Zorua's weaknesses (Fighting and Bug)

This video was a lot better than the last one, these solo runs seem to be more of your strong suit. Any reason that you chose another run in Kanto again? I get why not Johto, those runs tend to be pretty long due to the whole two regions thing. Are the Kanto runs better for video production or something? Anyway, good video, thanks for the content.

So I never thought he was Ground type but it would make sense. It has a Drill for a tail and all of its Pokedex entries talk about it burrowing underground. I as a kid thought Dunsparce was a Dragon type for some reason and held that belief until fighting Clair.

Great Video again. Just as always we need to know, what fossil you did take, even if you said what fossil you took. It's not like i haven't paid attention when watching the video, but comments are good for the youtube algorithm. I maybe have two ideas, what runs you maybe could try. That would be a Vulpix run in a gen of your choice. I know it can learn some great moves gen 4 onwards. The second one would be a Dunsparce run in Pokemon Emerald. I liked your idea, so i thought about mentioning it.

holy crap. I'm listening to the outro to this video and I heard a name that I recognized: Cody Knight. If it's spelled like that... I had a classmate who was on the wrestling team named Cody Knight back in high school. Real nice guy. Now, we graduated high school in 2014 (9 years ago as of this comment in December 2023) but... if they're the same guy, that'd be crazy. EDIT: a quick google search later: they are not the same guy. Still crazy, though.

Dunsparce is one of the two Pokemon that I never managed to register to my pokedex when I was a kid in Gold. I knew where to find it, but I was never lucky enough to encounter it, so I gave up eventually. The other one was Octillery. Since there was no trainer encounter with it (that I know of), there was just a blank in the dex and I just had no reason to train a Remoraid. And since I didn't had a friend who got one either, with no access to the internet at the time. I never completed my pokedex :D

My first thought about Dunsparce's typing was "How is that thing not a Bug or Dragon type? It absolutely looks like a bug or maybe some abstract sort of dragon, like a mix of a dogu and an overweight serpent. Also it has wings!" then "You're telling me this winged little grub doesn't have a Flying type or the Levitate ability? Why!?" and then after exhausting those options, I was like "You find it in sandy caves and it has a drill for a tail...please tell me it's Ground type!" And worst of all, the Japanese cryptid it's based on is supposed to be a _venomous_ snake. POISON TYPE. NOPE. Pure normal.
