Orchestra: concerto introductions are usually on the long side, presenting the various themes and essentially a summary of the first movement and sometimes entire pieces before cleverly setting the stage for the piano, going through various modulation and so forth Piano: fine, I'll do it myself

@@sebastian-benedictflore Yeah, like Rachmaninoff, but unlike Chopin, Medtner got no time for bullshit orchestra introduction.

One of the best piano concertos of all time. Why is it so rarely played and underrated?
@classicalpublisher02184 жыл бұрын
Fully agree! It is very rare you see themes developed as well as what Medtner does in this work. I think in Medtner's case he just lived at a bad time, where people were focusing on other super popular composers like Rachmaninoff or Scriabin. I've been encouraged lately to see some sort of revival of Medtner's music, although it is a slow process.

@@TheRonnos As an Australian myself, I have such a great respect but also sympathy for Geoffrey Tozer, since he was an amazing pianist but is also ridiculously underrated.. I'm particularly fond of Gillham's recording of this concerto (who was actually the one who made me start listening to Medtner in the first place). I hope we hear more Medtner from him soon! :)

@@classicalpublisher0218 yes he can continu the Geoffrey Tozer bloodline hi. Tozer lived in the wrong country Australia - I did read about this problem; in Europe or US he would have gotten all rewards he deserved. He was an exceptional great pianist with Liszt & Medtner; he had the gift to Tell Stories with his pianism instead of only playing music scores....

All three Medtner piano concertos are good, in my opinion. The first concerto is the most impressive from a structural standpoint. I like Igor Zhukov's recording of this one. It's intense. Yevgeny Sudbin's recording is good too, but I had not heard this one. This is a good one. I haven't listened to Tozer's, but I'm sure it's excellent. I have Dmitri Alexeev's recording, but I don't listen to it. It doesn't grab me in the way others do.

Genial!

This is a fabulous recording! It’s so clean and precise. It might not be the most dramatic and lush performance you can find, but every single motivic line in both the piano and orchestra is crystal clear - something I previously thought almost impossible.

Truly a masterpiece and on the same level of (if not above) Rach 2 or Grieg. Criminally underplayed, masterfully performed. Bravo!!

I just think Grieg wrote his concerto about 1860, Medtner wrote his concertos in 1920-1940... Medtner used to compose in a romantic way, in the period of Prokofiev Stravinsky Ravel ecc... They are more more and more interesting and they introduced a new language of course.

Medtner had some success with this work in the earlier phase of his life. Amazing that his 2nd concerto was less successful. The 2nd has much more melodic passages. Although the 2nd is better in my opinion, this has a lot going for it. A recording of Medtner playing it exists

Extremely appreciate the clarity of both the orchestra's and the pianist's playing: in other recordings although the pianist is simply phenomenal the orchestra feels off. This is a good recording for studying the composition. One thing though, i absolutely HATE how after choosing for a faster pace they kill the "moto" at that the soloist did build up moments ago (10:41): "espressivo" isn't an indication related to the tempo, they should've connected with the moto rather than playing as if they didn't care at all of what happened seconds before, it really makes no sense, they break the "flow": Medtner's forte. There's even a large corona to indicate the climax where the Oboe soloist takes the first voice, there are 2 thirds that stimulate movement: clearly the director of that orchestra didn't give it a second thought... if not, i don't know what the hell is happening there (also there is no staccato for the orchestra at Imagine it or play it with an instrument, the resonance from the cristalline piano passages gets picked up by the orchestra and elevated to the soloist. Why there can't be a recording of Medtner's concerto where both the orchestra and the pianist have a clear idea of what they're doing and play in complete symbiosis... why? (Probabilmente la risposta sono i soldi ed il voler sfornare la maggior quantità possibile di registrazioni...) EDIT: Wait, wtf, is this recording fake? 25:16 EDIT 2: No, nvm i've just looked into Gillham and might have just discovered about one of the most prominents and genuine pianists alive. He has a KZbin music where he explains what music is for him, feel a great simpathy for the man.

The first movement never presents a theme with enough identity to capture the listener. Grieg wasted not a moment and dimissed puttering around brilliant scale formulas to show off the soloist. Tchaikovsky captures it instantly and it suffices to win pianist and over and over again. This concerto belings in purgatory. It is false.
