How to insert the Medtronic Diabetes Guardian 3 Sensor.
In this video I show how I insert the Medtronic Guardian 3 Continuous Glucose Monitor Sensor in my upper arm, just above my triceps.
In 2018, a Medtronic rep taught me that wearing the sensor on the upper arm gave it a better chance of staying intact for a longer period of time AND would likely give me better readings as a result. I've worn the sensor on my arm ever since and experienced great success.
It can be tricky to do this on your own, so if you are trying an arm site for the first time, ask a friend, partner or parent to give you an assist.

As you said you have less obstacles on the back of your arm, I'm really feeling that :) actually the only time I had trouble using my CGM (currently Freestyle till the guardian arrives) was while driving into a parking lot where I had to get a ticket. While reaching out of the window i just pulled my CGM out which was quite painful/funny at the same time haha Thank you for the great video, it really took my fear of having to remove the needle away!

Thanks for your Arm insertion video. I have only used my waist area for my sensors and transmitters. They have worked for me. I now have enrolled to get the 780G upgrade from the 770G pump and the new Guardian 4 sensors have suggested the Arm insertion. I workout frequently and do not have much fat on my upper arm, so I am hesitant to try insertions in that new location. I want to thank you for your video with the techniques you use, especially with the taping.

I use skin tac wipes they're really sticky and I don't loose sensors anymore. I was using freestyle libre and just got this from Medtronic, hoping it wasn't a bad decision. Thanks for the info, your way looks easier than Medtronic's

I think it's all about personal preference. I used to use the skin tac wipes but found that it was a bit of overkill with the simpatch and skingrip patches.

I have been having my daughter put mine on my right back of arm. I always sleep in my left side mostly so I found your video here and decided to do it myself. I followed step by step then paused if necessary since it was my first time. The only issue is the needle didn’t retract into the sheath. But when I got a signal after turning the sensor back on the pump said start new sensor. So evidently I hope anyway that in two hours it will prompt me to test my blood sugar. Very informative video. I did locate mine a little more to the front of my arm so that the cover I have colorful ones like your black .

Great video, Rob. I appreciate it so much. When my husband is out of town, there’s no one to help me put the sensor in my arm. Like you, I had loads of problems putting it in my abdomen. But I’ve been Type 1 for over 56 years and so have lots of scar tissue from multiple daily injections before I started wearing a pump about twenty years ago. And I’m a cyclist too so lots of movement on my abdomen. Today I easily-or fairly easily-attached the sensor on my arm all due to your helpful video. BTW, i too use Skin Grip tapes. Much better than the ridiculous taping methods that come with the sensors. Thanks again!

Thanks for making this kind of content. I was diagnosed in 1999 at age 8 and a lot has changed since then. Informal information and advice wasn't really out there. Getting the minimed 508 pump in like 2002 was revolutionary. For any kids or parents of kids with T1D I recommend you get involved with the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and look into T1D summer camps. As a kid who was the only one and bullied left and right it was invaluable to be able to go to a summer camp where everyone was diabetic. Some of my best and most cherished memories were from there at Camp Endres in Oklahoma 😁

@@Giupeppe098 Ah, that sucks.. You can do it though! It's hard but try your best and it does get easier. Eventually it is almost second nature and less stressful. There's definitely a lot to learn and it can be really stressful learning everything while trying to keep it under control while the rest of life goes on regardless. I will say that getting an insulin pump is the greatest tool. I finally got the continuous glucose monitor with a new pump and it's been great. After all this time I either know or can guess how many carbs are in nearly everything 😆 Good luck with everything Antonio!

This really was a great video. I have been using my Guardian system for about four months. I am using the 670 until October of this year when my warranty sends the 770. I generally use the tops of my thighs yet I don't think Medtronic has approved that location. It has never not worked and I will continue to do it there. Thanks again.

Wow 😃This trick came handy How do you all manage your sugar levels while working out? I have major troubles in keeping the numbers in limit during and after the workout...most of the times the numbers drop low during the workout, and they start shooting up after the workout

Always wear mine just below my upper chest on the left or right side. This solves the movement problem. My routine of exposing the needle is much different than yours. I use a flat surface and hold the ears while lifting the serter. I also never expose the sticky part until i've inserted the needle. It's interesting to see the many different ways people accomplish the insertion. Always feel a little timid about the needle going in my arm. Looking at the needle, it seems a bit large. I don't feel very comfortable about not being able to use two hands to connect the transmitter to the sensor. That green light doesn't always flash when its supposed to and I have to reconnect to get it to start. The guardian 3 in my opinion has too many fault issues compared with others like the Dexcom models. Medtronic needs to work on this to make it more reliable. Thanks for your video. Maybe I'll give my arm a try.

I’ve had best experience with the inner part of my arms. I like his technique to give full exposure of the adhesive even tho both ways seem to work for me. I was skeptical at first going closer in under my arm but once done it was quite comfortable and out of the way.

Update: So now I've been using both my arms since watching this video. I like it a lot better. I find the arm to be much more comfortable than my previous locations. I can't seem to pull the needle from my arm once inserted. I have to get my wife to help me. I'm always afraid that when I pull the needle the whole sensor will come right out. Any tips? Also find that using a pair of tweezers to pull off the backing is much easier than reaching into the serter with my fingers to pull it off.

@@aliciabrooks4829 I wish MiniMed would take cues from the Freestyle Libre Sensors. Despite being quite different as the libre sensors are a complete throwaway unit and the Guardian and Dexcoms have the transmitter units as they don't use NFC like the Libre's do, the Libre setup is vastly superior and so much more simple. I like the the Freestyle inserter automatically pulls the adhesive backing off when loading it, and also pulls the needle and keep it in the inserter. But the issue with that is each inserter is 1 time use only and had to be disposed of which is just more plastic waste we don't need! My new endo I met with today wants me to try a pump again since I've been off one for about 9 years after I was on one kinda on and off for 13 years (originally had a Disetronic, but then switched to Minimed after a year and had to replace my pump at least a dozen times and several almost killed me when they stopped working but didn't show any errors) And one aspect I really don't care for on the Guardian 3 system is having to do 2 calibrations/day. Since I'm now on disability due to complications from diabetes, I have an erratic sleep schedule where I might not be able to sleep for 3 days, and then crash and be out for 18-36 hours, I don't want the pump and cgm to stop working together and being able to auto-correct just because I was asleep and never woke up to do the mandatory calibrations. I saw the Guardian 4 is supposed to eliminate these calibrations so if I do end up going on yet another MiniMed pump, I hope the newer Guardian 4 cgm comes out sooner than later!

@@VinVizz62 You could try making a custom little strap (sort of like a tourniquet) with a hole cutout so the needle will poke through but the rest will hold down the sensor and allow you to use a weight or something to attach the strap to in order to out pressure on the sensor and keeping it firmly attached to your arm while you use your other arm to pull the needle out. It'd be nice if they just incorporated a mechanism in the inserter to spring back up after the insertion and pull the needle out with it like the Freestyle Libre inserter does (except theirs are one time use only and the needle is then permanently stuck in the inserter) But I'm sure with the amount of $ Medtronic makes off of the pump and cgm systems, along with all their other medical equipment, some engineer should easily be able to figure out a practical solution to reduce the number of steps required when changing out sensors.

I’m ok with wearing on arm, but prefer the stomach. The Medtronic sales representative that you referenced is mistaken (regarding reasons why wearing on stomach is wrong). We can wear the Dexcom on stomach for 10days with consistency; no errors.

So if you use a different type of adhesive tape instead of those 2-part medtronic strips, this is much easier. I was trying to figure out how one person would do this but with a circular one piece adhesive, it seems really simple.

Beginners should be warned that this is a hack video which deviates from the official instructions, in that it employs a different adhesive, and skips a step by peeling the sticker backing BEFORE insertion into the arm, rather than afterward. The official Medtronic video barely mentions the adhesive sticker crack & peel part, which is unfortunate because if you screw up the sticker, you screw up the whole sensor and require a replacement.

My husband puts my Medtronic sensors on my arms for me and he puts the sensor facing down and since then we have had no bleeders. So the gray part is at the bottom of the sensor looking towards my wrist and white towards the shoulder. I find it very comfy on the arms.

Excellent Video! I've been using the G3 Sensor in my abdomen for about 2 years now. I get bleeders about ever other change. Was wondering how using the Sensor in your Tricep area affects weight lifting. I work Triceps really hard, and there's really not alot of fatty tissue near my triceps when fully extended. Do you know if this is still an option for me? (G3 inserted into tricep over fatty tissue)?

i use mine on my thigh. i find that i accidently rip them off sometimes when putting on or taking off shirts when sleepy and forget that its there. the belly was horrible, during the summer they lasted like a day or two because the tape that comes with it for me just falls right off when you're sweaty and my belly happens to be where i get sweaty. outside of my thigh doesnt move that much and i dont get very sweaty there. and in sweden i dont get any other tape for free than the one that comes in the guardian sensor box and the one they suggested instead is a cloth tape that i can buy at the drugstore. the original tape is this plastic tape that doesnt handle moisture at all.. the one from the drugstore works, its like this large patch that i place over the whole thing. meanwhile my pumps tape have lasted two weeks without problems (i know i know i should change it every 3 days but i was lazy a couple of years back) and my pump is attached to my belly so its definitely the provided tape that is useless for this product. you have a different kind of tape that i havnt seen tho, i might order a pack to test it out

@@krisbraaten I'm actually switching mine tomorrow as well. I think it really depends on your physiology, but I find that my arms 8 times out of 10 have almost no pain. Super manageable. I think it all depends on the actual placement, but as I say in the video, that little region between your triceps and your deltoid is a fatty tissue area that I find super effective. @@DiabeticsDoingThings Update! So I was very nervous leading up to it, but I officially got my sensor in my arm this morning! I went with my non-dominant arm. The pain was minimal, and I was thrilled there was no blood at the site (which has been an issue with me this past year in my abdomen). It was awkward getting the tape on with just one hand but I made it work. If I like this placement, I might look into those round adhesives that you use. It’s still in the warm up period, so I am eager to see if there is any difference in accuracy and the experience this next week compared to it in my abdomen.

don't push teh applicator against the skin, that makes the needle to pinch yout muscle and bleed, never push the applicator, just put on the surfece os the skin without pushing.

Hoping you will answer bc I am new to this. We've had the supplies for a couple of months, but I've been nervous and unsure of exactly what to do. This is for my father and he is bed bound. Since he has aides and they are not allowed to test his blood I thought this would be a better option. Hi heather, I think you could probably find a space where it’s a bit more to the side of the arm than directly on the back that way when he’s laying on his back the sensor will still be visible to the receiver.

Never had an insulin pump but am on the list to get one. How big is the sensor needle, I currently use 5mm gauge pen needles. Will the blood 🩸 on your arm not affect the readings

The sensor needle is small, I truly don't know the actual size off the top of my head but I'm sure it's googleable - the blood didn't affect my readings and this sensor lasted the entire time.The bleeders can be scary but from a functionality standpoint I've never had a problem.

I much prefer thr back of the arm as opposed to my stomach, but the only downside is I frequently have caught the edge of the sensor on the edge of a door when walking by too close and have ripped it completely out. Sucks when that happens because you might not have a replacement close by, or even if you do you have just wasted a good sensor and now have to insert another and go through the whole warmup period again. I haven't done it as often as I used to, but it does still happen every now-and-then.

Where exactly do we need to be “squeezing” to release the needle? I have always been able to rely on someone to help with arm insertions and now am struggling to take out the needle by myself without ripping the whole thing out. Does squeezing something help reduce resistance?

The way to do it by the book is to place two fingers at the base, then pull the top of the needle to remove. But when you’re doing it yourself on the arm it can be tricky. There are two ridges on the sides of the needle housing that you can “squeeze”/“depress” that help with the removal but it’s more art than science

I would say it hurts about half the time. I benefit from a good amount of tricep muscle/skin/fat and find it much less painful than other areas

Hey comment section or creator! Do you think the back arm would work for a welder working in an industrial area? I use my hands a lot. But I have found that in the summer my sensor falls out when in my abdomen area. I’ve been a little skeptical of my arm due to how that needle stick gonna feel 😅 lol

I prefer the back of the arm to the abdomen, there are way fewer variables. I can’t speak to whether it would work for a welder but I would try it out and see!

How bleeders affect accuracy ? My sensor fails to accept calibrations if there were bleeders and has to be removed, somethings wrong with the insertion design and that long needle.

for bleeders, it really just varies from sensor to sensor. Some bleeders I don't have any issues with, and some fail early and need to be replaced.

I just received my 770 G - the CGM is antiquated. Every 12 hour calibration and a 2 hour warm up? It feels like I am back in the 1990s with the system technology. I will most likely return to Libre ~ lasts 14 days and no calibration required. Disappointed in this technology. All of these extra steps, every 12 hour calibration, and 2 hr warm up is exhausting - all for 7 days - if you are lucky. 😣

😂 my serter thing is stuck and won't insert when I press the buttons even when I press it in on both sides. PRO TIP: Don't use IV Prep pads before inserting. It can alter the sensor accuracy significantly. If you're having problems sticking use alcohol, insert it and then use IV Prep before taping. Definitely use 3rd party adhesive patches like simpatches.

URGENT. NEED HELP!! I had the serter stuck in go mode, locked in place ready to insert the needle. When I push the green buttons to release the needle it’s stuck and will not release. I’ve tried to mess with it, push it down and nothing. What can I do?

I am not sure where to begin. Medtronic Guardian CGM is subpar and incredibly frustrating to operate. As a RN with type 1 for over 30 years, requiring 2 hours to charge the CGM transmitter followed by 2 hours for the sensor to begin tracking glucose levels is an embarrassment to Medtronic’s intellectual property designers. I am disappointed that I chose Medtronic. I would not recommend this insulin pump CGM system. It is far too clunky, the accuracy of the CGM readings is poor, and the warm up taking 4 hours to accomplish is simply archaic.

​@@Tom-ru9ds Apparently, the cost of the software upgrade is US$3400.00 - Insurance says it is a different "model" and not covered since it has not been long enough. The sensor in the arm is about as effective as in the stomach for me - ymmv.

Not a fan of the sensor. It seems to work fine for a couple months then will start having problems for no reason. Always wear it on my leg. Had to call to get new ones multiple times. I’m not wearing the cgm on the back of my arm either. Don’t recommend using this cgm at all.
