Watch video in full 1080P here: • Meet a Halfie: Alicia ...
Alicia is a 3 time USA Nationals Rollerskating Champion from New Jersey, UC Irvine Graduate, amd currently a Neuroscience PhD Student at Juntendo University in Japan. She got diagnosed with cancer in its early stages too, which she speaks about and dealing with it in a language she did not speak. And she’s half Japanese half Italian American!
She had to find her path in the US, and then in Japan while battling cancer in a country where her mother was from, but could not speak the language. Despite the tough times, Alicia always kept swimming through the turmoil, and is working her way to help others by getting her doctors degree. Watch to hear her story and goofs and gaffs navigating through this world as a biracial Japanese, Jersey girl.
WATCH VIDEO IN 720P!
I somehow exported an interlaced video, making the 1080P video have scan lines and it's difficult to watch... sorry.

I think it's very good to see more people featured on this channel, and I hope to keep featuring more friends with interesting stories to share.
Meet a Halfie on Hapa Hour aims to hear about the experiences of a mixed Asian person (otherwise known as Hapa) in the world today. The word "Hafu" or ハーフ in the Japanese language, refers to someone who is "half Japanese" ethnically, and "half something else". Hapa does not necessarily include someone who is Half Korean and Half Japanese (since the two are both "Asian"), but the term Hafu can be used to describe anyone who is mixed Japanese and something else.
This series is more or less becoming "Hafu Hour", since I know many mixed Japanese people, but I hope you all can still learn something and possibly relate!

Hi everyone ! Thank you for watching our video ☺️ This was my first time appearing on KZbin, so please excuse my awkwardness haha 😂 I was pretty hesitant talking about something so private on a platform that can be viewed by literally anyone, but after reading everyone’s responses and receiving such kind messages on Instagram, I’m glad that I decided to do this interview. 🙏 We have to make most of the life we have right? ☺️ I hope to be making more videos from now on (and hopefully get more comfortable in front of the camera) so I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you ! Thank you again Max for having me on your channel ! みんな、よろしくお願いしますね!☺️🙏 *Edit: Max asked me to let you all know that the full HD re-upload of this video can be found here for people having any issues with this video ☺️ kzbin.info/www/bejne/mILWY3R5pp2YpK8 Thanks again for watching ! 🙏

A very inspirational and well done interview indeed. As others noted, you could write a book, make more videos about your medical research or just share experiences in general. And don't let some dummies bring you down, there just a tiny minority. 頑張ってください👍

@aliciafumi1311 You truly have a motivating story to relate to, This episode is a mental boost for me, hearing how optimistic you are dealing with challenges in a linguistically, culturally "foreign land" to you. I am also curious about the neuroscience and how the brain functions to deal with mental/well-being issues. Keep on winning Alicia, feel free to open-up and share your stories by any means, videos, blog, etc. You'd be amazed how much impact you could influence on other's life, at least you cheered me up big time in this video.

Amazing story and great video. I’ve gotta say from personal experience being 1st generation American, even with European parents, results in a lot of similar situations like with food, style, language barriers, etc. I remember growing up resenting having an identity crisis, especially in high school when people were abusive, but ultimately it made me a more unique person. College was always very accepting, but I know if I went to university overseas I would’ve had some trouble. She’s very brave!

I really appreciate this interview. I'm happy that Alicia shared her story with us. I grew up in Hawaii as a 4th generation and I can only speak English. When I visited Japan earlier this month, I got a lot of stares from Japanese people because I look full Japanese (I'm actually mixed) but I don't speak the language. Now I'm hoping to learn some Japanese to learn about my roots. I hope to hear about more of these experiences!

Wow...what an impressive individual. She's extremely lucky to be diagnosed and treated with cancer while she's still young. Her path to graduate school is an unusual one as well. I can see a little bit of myself in her cause I was educated overseas as well. Due to life issues, I was a PhD candidate for chemistry in Asia. I know the feeling of having to adapt cause going through culture shock and all other aspects of life in a foreign place can be super tough. She's right in terms of just adapting and go on with it. I'm personally not very good at adapting so I'm happy there's someone who worked it out

Respect to Alicia. People don't realize how tough it is for half's in Japan. Especially those born and raised in Japan, let alone hafu's who come to Japan in a later stage in life. For non hafu's who move to Japan I feel they get a pass easier for a lot of things. Like opening bank account, someone writing for you in Nihongo, Post Office stuff, return stuff (that could be another segment...Japans return policy OMGGG what a nightmare)...etcetc

You have no idea what you're talking about. There are half-Japanese politicians like the Governor of Okinawa. It all depends whether you're culturally Japanese or not. If you're not, you will always be treated as an outsider.

What kind of cancer does she have? As a survivor myself who was diagnosed in their 20s, I'm amazed that she was even able to attend university while going through treatment - then again, I'm sure the healthcare in Japan helps! I'm 7 years in remission and still have debt piling up from doctors from dealing with my diagnosis in the U.S.

Andrew Cabrera thank you for your comment! I’m sorry to hear that you were diagnosed as well, but I’m also so happy to hear that you’re 7 years in remission !!!! That’s amazing ! 🙏 I decided not to come out about what kind of cancer I was diagnosed with, just because I want to keep some privacy about the topic, but you’re right.. the healthcare system in Japan really did help. 🙏 I’m sorry you have to deal with debt after everything you must have been through 😭 but really happy you’re in remission ! 🙏 keep fighting !

Wow, this video was awesome, I loved it, shes so nice... those last words of trying to not worry too much about things you can't control was all I needed right now. Thanks Alicia! 23:12 is so relatable, I'm Italian, but I don't know jack shit of italian. Because of that I'm really afraid of saying that I am to other people and they expect me to start talking italian lol.

Why don't you move to Italy for a period of time? I think we in Italy give a different value on being italian based on culture rather than ethnic background, that's why we might be confused if someone says "oh I'm italian too" and don't start talking italian to you
