It's possible that the Corrine Tan doll & books are going to be more relatable to children. Because she wears modern clothes and she's the protagonist of her books. The previous Chinese American doll Ivy Ling had '70's clothes/style & was part of the best friends collection.

I love Corrine and I’m very excited they are partnering with AAPI!💖💝💖
The doll is kinda disappointing. From her backstory to her appearance. Her backstory and family is how her mom divorced her dad, remarried a rich white guy who tells Corinne to shrug off the racist bullying she receives from classmates. There is a lack of Asian males and a Miss Saigon trope, which is perpetuated by the writer who has a white husband to shield her from the racism, apparently. Corinne has a dyed streak in her hair, which is a common trope where Asian girls have dyed hair and are often seen as rebellious. Personally upset at how her mom is divorced, Asian couples have the lowest divorce rates ever. I mean imagine having a kid who looks up to Corinne and you're an Asian dad having to hand off a nice book except you're a poor deadbeat or something. I don't believe there's any mention of her speaking any Chinese languages at all either. MOST Asian parents teach their kids, and she had an Asian dad, so there's a high chance of her to. But if not, it feels like it brings a weird assimilation in where they abandon the language and primarily speak English, especially since when her stepdad isn't Asian.

@@gmailgmail1010 I'm glad they're all for representation, no doubt, if you talked to me back in 2014 I would've screamed at the idea of Corinne. But now as a teen I can't just see the appeal of her when she's used as a semi-political(?) icon. A girl trying to live her life, fictional or not, should not be the poster girl of an issue that shouldn't be treaded on and treated as a "bad experience". The quote "Show, don't tell" makes it seem kinda pretentious when they make her SPECIFICALLY to promote awareness. That's just another feeling I have after seeing people pointing out the bad stuff.
@rexology14313 жыл бұрын
I believe your thinking a little too deep into this doll While I do agree with some of the stuff you pointed out, at the end of the day the whole propose of this doll is to make Asian Americans feel accepted and have something that they couldn’t get before. A doll that looks exactly like them, even if they didn’t experience the same backstory as the doll. Plus this is there first doll, not only doll. Maybe In the future they’ll expand more when it comes to backstories for future Asian dolls

I think her having a step dad is important because there are many kids who have divorced parents and have trouble welcoming new step parents, especially when that parent is of a different race. Also, she does speak mandarin and her father isn’t absent from her story. I totally agree with the coloured streak in her hair. That was at the very least a narrow minded decision that didn’t have a lot of thought about what it was projecting.

No, this is not a "Trans Gender" Doll. There is no such thing as "Trans." You are born either a man, or a woman. It's sad that people are leaving comments like this.
@Pirategirl4nightwish3 жыл бұрын
No, she’s Chinese American. Why would you think the doll is transgender? Or are you just trying to stir up trouble?
@freyja63603 жыл бұрын
@@sophiagbachman Your post is very hurtful and quite disgusting. It makes you sound really uneducated. There ARE not only trans, but intersex and nonbinary people as well, myself included. Doesn't change the fact that Corinne is "just" a cute Chinese-American doll (at last!) without any body parts and there's nothing like that in her story. People should stop responding to topics they know nothing about, especially when they are started by sad internet trolls.
