My first introduction to Commelina communis was at the local historic site I used to volunteer at. I'm not sure it would get out of hand here so much like it does there, but it did persist along the base of the flowerbed along the foundation of the home. The blue flowers were delightful. Hard to find blues like that in flowers. Appreciate all the info you shared about it.

This flower is such a beautiful blue, it's worth putting up with it. Thanks a lot.

I’m glad you did this! I have a hard time telling these apart from smartweed (polygonum) before they bloom. I have both in my pastures and yard

Debra, the next video of this plant in flower also shows smartweed. So you'll get a side-by-side comparison. I have it everywhere and don't want it in my garden, but it's so hard to get rid of since it's a perennial! edit to add: www.ediblewildfood.com/ladys-thumb.aspx

Thank you for the knowledge. Maybe some cardboard put down in your rows could be helpful too? Your plants look lush and happy! Take care =-)

@ 2:37, looks like Corizus hyoscyami - Red squash bug.

Thank you! My entomology class years ago helped narrow it down a bit, but not completely. I'll look that up and see if that's it now that I have one in a jar. edit it to add: I looked at pictures, and that's close, but not the same insect. The head on mine is more elongate and the markings are different. Also, they mate differently - one on top of the other, not end-to-end.

Oh well, it looked like the squash bug Brent has trouble with down there, so I figured it was worth mentioning... Do let us know when you have nailed down the Id...

I think I would be tempted to put some of it in a large pot for use,but try to control some of the rest....

Some places, like under these trees, I leave this plant alone, but pull it out whenever I find it in the garden. It's tenacious, beautiful, and a bad weed!

I'm not aware of any seed company selling these seeds. I'm afraid you'll have to search for it. I did see an Etsy seller who had a different species of Commelina for sale.
