Hey josh, I’m the one who started the comments on reddit about the angle of your wrist. I stand by what I said, so I’m glad your aware of it, as I was pretty sure was the case. I do want to point out, that people on that site have sort of blown it out of porpotion, and just took it upon themselves to assume that I hate you and think you have no credibility. That is not the case, I think you have many good videos, I have recommended them to other bassists looking to learn, but I did make sure to bring up the wrist thing. I have brought this up whenever someone mentions you on Reddit, Because I feel it’s necessary so someone who wants to learn to knows not to do that whenever it’s avoidable. On that site Now it seems that whenever you get brought up(which isn’t uncommon, so your doing something right) someone mentions me and assumes I’m going to come on and attack your credibility, i don’t do that. I apologize if you read any of that and thought i was just being a pretentious jerk, I was not trying to do that at all.

Hey James! I'm glad you made the comments you did. Like I said in this vid, I actually play with pretty straight wrists (except when that's impossible, like playing certain chord shapes etc.) in "real life," but hadn't really noticed until I read your comments and rewatched some of my videos that I play quite differently when I'm just sitting and teaching. Totally helpful and constructive criticism. Thanks for taking the time to write here, and keeping my wrists honest! :)

And he simply found a bass that works for his sound and needs. Then he moved on. TO PLAY. Bravo.

Hey Josh ! I love the new Cirrus. Your dad does the BEST set ups and the additional upgrades like input jack, and battery clips are great, too. Your bass is probably around a 2000. The Cirrus came out in 1998. Your wood is walnut with maple stringers and a walnut top, but it might be bubinga, too. Like you, I've played many basses and the Cirrus (the old USA made) are about as good as it gets and a steal for the money.
@lipptech13 жыл бұрын
The top on both of these basses are bubinga.

First I got me a Cirrus 5 BXP tigereye (indonesian model) for a Toto project and I really liked it and still do. So I searched the web for an US model. I found this walnut with bubinga one too. It‘s my workhorse now. For all who are interested, it‘s a 35" scaled bass. Not that convenient for small hands, but a narrow string spacing. I like that, others hate it and say you can‘t slap on it. I‘ve no problems slapping this bass. I had no chance to compare my old one with a new cirrus, but maybe somebody out there has. Look KZbin for Mike Porcaro and John Taylor (Duran Duran).

Hey Josh, Good video! I have one question for you which had bothered me for a quite of time. I started my bass this March, and I am about to switch a new bass in June or July. When I was browsing an affordable bass, your 4 string Peavey has got my attention. But I noticed that it is 35 scales instead of 34. My hand is good on Fender Squire vintage......which is 34. Is there a big difference between that? I mean some issues like my finger will have to press harder and stretch more? Thanks.

Hey Clinton, it's hard to say. I've been playing it so long I don't notice it, it's just what the bass feels like. Hi, I want to purchase a bass that can have low action and low tension on the strings. Years ago someone lent me an old bass without visible brand/model and it played liked butter, effortless pressing of the strings and low smooth tension, even in standard tuning. The owner then moved and came back for it and ever since I've been trying to replicate that bass feel/play. Even the owner didn't know the brand/model of the bass. It was similar to a Fender precision but it wasn't one. I went to a music store and tried several basses but they all seem to have high action and the strings had high tension, they were too tight compared to that bass I loved to play! I'm starting to think that bass was an oddity, maybe those rare instruments that had some kind of "defect" but I'm not giving up on my search. In your experience is there a particular bass model/string combo that can give me what I'm looking for? Thanks!

Hey Lena, I've got some in-depth beginner bass reviews here, along with some recommendations: www.bassbuzz.com/gear/beginner-basses/?ref=2 Playing left is usually just a mirror reversal of playing righty, you get a left hand instrument where everything is flipped. I personally am left-handed but I learned bass like a right-handed person, which is what I tell students to try for the sake of ease in finding instruments. Unless you really want to play lefty, in which case more power to you!

@bustabass90256 жыл бұрын
Jayson Kang Five string is the way to go. Greater range in the sweet spot of the fretboard, deeper depth with the low B string, which more and more music is calling for these days. I found the five string easier for position shifts because of the extended range, which made learning new music incredibly easier. All said, if I were just starting out I would begin with the 5'er.
@pietarivuola6 жыл бұрын
My advice for you is to buy a bass with the amount of strings you want. I had a four-string bass at first but now I've had a five-string bass a little over a year. I could certainly survive with four strings, but the extra range on a five-string sure is handy sometimes. Especially on theatre-type projects, latin music or if there's a lot of transposing of songs and you just need to get that low note at a point in a song. On a five-string you have also more notes available on a given position which is helpful sometimes. Fivers are usually bigger and weigh more than four-string basses, and if you don't really need that B-string I guess it's better to go with a four-string bass. For a beginner, four strings might be better because of usually better ergonomics, and also because having one less string kind of forces you to change positions more which probably helps when learning the fretboard. I should mention that also one of the reasons I got a 5-string bass was because you could get the 16.5mm string spacing only on the five-string version of my bass (Ibanez SR range) instead ot 19 mm in the four-string ones.

Cirruses are 35" scale, so I always string them with extra long scale strings. Elixir only makes an extra long B in a taperwound (at least from what I saw, I could be mistaken). It seems to be working okay, but I don't know that much about taperwound vs. not.

You say "um" a lot, which doesn't bother me, but it's a good idea to figure out what's causing that in your mind. Here's what causes the Um issue for me, from higher-order to fundamental: I don't want to be interrupted; I don't feel like I have a strong social presence, so I feel people will step over me in conversation if I don't use a placeholder word; I lack self-confidence; I'm unhappy with myself. Sorry for talking. Nice video
