In truth, we probably haven’t got enough bandwidth to do the twists and turns of Mike Vallely’s skateboarding life story justice- so let us perhaps instead consider some of the many roles he has played in order to provide some context as to what makes him such an enduring enigma.
There are worse places to start charting his cultural ascent within skateboarding than his breakout section from Powell Peralta’s game-changing 1988 video release Public Domain. Skateboarding was changing daily at that point with the genesis of street skating and Mike V’s East Coast aesthetic and floppy- wristed silhouette caught the attention of an entire skateboarding world that had realised that there was more to this culture than hero-worshipping the MTV- generation of sleeveless T-shirted Californian vert professionals who were appearing more dated and anachronistic by the day.
His double-kick Barnyard board for World Industries effectively signalled a new era in skateboarding trick development which Salman Agah would later pioneer and effectively treble the skateboarding trick lexicon by adding nollie and switchstance possibilities to every trick hitherto utilising the ollie alone.
Despite being on a tangent to what the skateboarding mainstream was doing, Vallely was still an enticing prospect to sponsors precisely because he has always had his own constituency within skateboarding: 120,000 Mexicans turned out to watch him put on a one-man skate demo in 2008.
Accordingly, he would ride for brands like Powell, Black Label and Element Skateboards when each of those brands were at the peak of their powers before finally starting his own Street Plant label in 2015 while somehow finding time along the way to front the re-formed punk band Black Flag and have stints in both semi- professional wrestling and ice hockey.
Now settled with his family in Des Moines, Iowa he has enjoyed a 35-year pro skating career on his own terms. There are no other Mike Vallely’s.
Madars Apse hits the streets with a true original to learn about Street Plant, punk rock and the journey of a street scoundrel from New Jersey.

When you think about how much time mike v spends either inverted and/or with his head closer to the ground then the average skater not only is the helmet not something to judge, but something that makes total sense.

This was seriously great...have ridden maybe 30 MIke V decks since 87 and still do today...the PP Elephant graphic is still the most powerful graphic in skateboarding history and I still see it everyday. Its been with me that long. Mike V influenced me heavily after Public Domain. I couldn't ollie onto handrails just didn't have that pop but after Public Domain seeing Mike caveman rails I could then make them. And Madar's is the man. Was lucky enough to meet him in Dubai a few years back and he's the real deal. What you see there is what you get...really nice guy and very very good at skateboarding. And big shout at Kristian Svitak. Style for miles.

There has been some damn good Skate Takes episodes - this one is tough to beat. Mike V. is about as gnarly as it gets. In 1988, Mike V. along with Lance Mountain, Steve Saiz and Rodney Mullen came to my hometown in Memphis, TN for a demo in a parking lot of a local mall. There were quite a of us groms trying to get their autographs and they all graciously stayed til everyone got it.... I was ( and will always be) a fan( hate using that term) of Lance and his skating from watching the Powell vids and contests. It was Mike V that was skating everything that day in the mall parking lot - both street and vert. From then on Mike V was one of those skaters I paid attention to as far as he rode for and his sponsors to his photos in mags. Mike is a true pioneer in the world of skateboarding....

I have been on board with Mike since I saw him in the article with Gonz and Natas pointing at his broken nose. I’m thinking TWS, but memories are hard to come by these days. As I drifted in and out of skateboarding over the last 35 years, I could always seem to rely on Mike to be a rock solid consent no matter what era of skateboarding Mike carved his niche and is able to stay relevant. I give you all the props in the world brother!! I’m stoked on all you do! Starting with Elephant( shit situation, so sorry). Now with Srreetplant. Elephant bullshit obviously happened for a reason. I’m so happy to see you continue to do skateboarding your own way, and on your terms with no compromise. Love you man Never Comply

I’m not really into skating anymore but I can still watch it, I remember being like 12 back in 2009 learning about Mike V and how much of a hardcore (rebel like) legend he was. seeing him teach younger kids skateboarding, ride bikes and wear a helmet is a 360 of what I remember him as, it’s so cool to see him doing so well and helping the skate community so much!

Skating on Ur own he's happy skating with a couple dudes he's happy skating with a crew he's happy. As long as he still stands on a board he will be happy. I'm 48 and I still skate the best I can when I can. Mike v will always be a skate brother in my eyes, I actually saw him at livi skatepark Scotland late 80s it was mobbed haha but was an amazing day..

13 or 14 years ago, I took a break from work, as a snow cone vendor, and went to a shoe store. I saw a pair of shoes that I immediately loved. I went to checkout. The cashier lady told me I could get a 2nd pair half off. I went back to the shelf where I found my first pair and saw another. The first was chocolate brown. The second black with white soles, if I remember correctly. They were Victory Skate Shoes. Mike V. I found that out on a whim my second month wearing them.
