This video hit close to home because I was married for 22 yrs and then got divorced and became a single mom. My husband and I had 6 children together and he had two prior to me, one which I raised. It has been a struggle raising them but so far they all turned out to be wonderful people and successful. I have one left in high school and the rest have finished college and work. I’m now working on me. Trying to re-discover myself at 48. I lean on God and pray I figure out what I will do from here, now that I’ve raised my children and I’m still single.

My mom use to and still tells me and my sisters how BEAUTIFUL we are. She said the reason I tell you so much is so that when some guy comes along and says how beautiful you are, you can say "You gon have to tell me something new b/c my mom already told me how beautiful I am". Yup ! And it wasn't per se a cocky thing she just didn't want us to fall head over heels by a guy just telling us we're beautiful . That it'll take more than just saying that to get with us. My mom never really gave me a one liner advice. There’s been a multi of advices given to me through her actions and songs. Mom would always wake us up singing “Rise, shine, give God the glory. Rise, shine, give God the glory. The God belongs to God.” She would turn everything off and make us pray for several minutes straight and also read the Bible. She taught us the importance of education, I.e I can remember us reading the encyclopedia everyday to learn a new word and then use it in a sentence. I value all these things and will carry them on when, God willing, I have children.

What an elegant and gracious woman your mother is. So strong to have raised five children, that is amazing. My mother would encourage us to do what made us happy. She passed away years ago and I can’t remember exact advice. But she always took in any of our friends into the house, was always generous with her affection, open-minded with us kids, everybody loved her.

This was by far my favorite episode. Malikah and Khadijah mom reminds me of my mom. She too raised 5 children alone. She was a registered nurse and always worked two jobs. She was quite active as the head of PTA, she made certain we stay busy, and supported us in everything.
