Spend as much time with your parents/grandparents as you can, even if you think it's boring. The memories, knowledge they have is invaluable. My grandparents had fruit trees that we had to go down & pick each fall. They had about a football sized plot of various fruit trees. We would pick while grandma & my aunts worked in the kitchen putting the fruit up. We would can some, slice & freeze some and the ones not quite ripe would be wrapped and put in the sunroom to finish.

Something that would make this task much easier. Spread old sheets or plastic tarps underneath the apple trees. You can set the ladder close enough to the tree branches. Shake the tree, the ripe apples will fall off and the sheets/tarps will make the ripe apples easier to pick up.
