From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all-inside the mind.
Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions - Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Phyllis lives in my town. I work at her favorite restaurant and she's the sweetest person ever! She always chats with all the employees, remembers our names, and is happy to take photos! Love her!

I really love how Pixar incorporated Phyllis' facial features into the character design of Sadness. It's really cute!

Actually, to determine who voices their characters, the folks at Pixar match up the character talking with the voices of different actors or actresses using voice clips from different films to see who would fit which character! So instead of basing a character around the voice actor, they cast a voice actor based on the character! :)

Phyllis Smith is an awesome actress. I've been watching on OA on Netflix and she is amazing. Kind of surprised, because she's usually in comedy, but she shows an unbelievable range in drama too.

I've usually only seen her in Comedic roles. Just finished the OA, It was a completely different side of her acting I've never seen. I loved it. She played her role so wonderful. Only reason why I got teary eyed was because of her acting in the last 15 minutes. When she has the choice to leave the school or run back to her "boys". Anyways, awesome powerful performance on her part.

Love how Phyllis Smith's personality follows her characters around. In "The Office" she was typically down, or at least very quiet. In this movie, she plays the abstract emotion of sadness, and in "Bad Teacher" she played a nervous, middle-aged teacher
