Definition of poor , is having less than those around you. Not enough to sustain life and unhappy with it. In North America we do have so much more, it's easy to pity and say poor. I'd say this man is poor as it caused his wife to leave. You say he's proud , so not so poor as to lose his personal dignity. I wish him the best for him as it satisfy him. And makes him happy..not being poor still leaves many who have much unhappy.i wish him a happy healthy life.
